MMDA mulls ‘zipper lane’ on EDSA
By Perseus Echeminada (The Philippine Star) | Updated June 25, 2013 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) plans to expand the “zipper lane,” a counter-flow scheme currently being implemented along the Rockwell flyover in Makati, to EDSA, an official said yesterday.

“The zipper lane has been proven effective in easing traffic along Rockwell flyover,” MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino told The STAR.

They are considering the scheme since the bulk of southbound vehicles come in from Quezon City in the morning while the traffic buildup on EDSA’s northbound lane occurs during the afternoon, he said.

One of EDSA’s southbound lanes will be open to northbound motorists from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. while one of EDSA’s northbound lanes will be open to southbound motorists from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tolentino added.

Tolentino, however, clarified that the MMDA’s Traffic Engineering Center is still finalizing its study of the proposed expansion of the zipper lane as part of a government program to ease traffic along EDSA and other major roads in the metropolis.

The MMDA chief said only light vehicles and private vehicles will be allowed on the proposed zipper lane. Road signs will be put up and U-turn slots closed while the counter-flow is in effect, he added.

Tolentino said if the EDSA zipper lane is a success, a similar scheme may be implemented along C5 Road.
Ano sa tingin nyo mga kasama?

Wow. This will be great. I think.

Agree Bro. It does give an additional lane that will be free from buses swerving in and out and stopping at supposed terminals.

I suppose you will recall they used to do this in SLEX when there was no Skyway yet, until they built the Skyway until Alabang. Not sure if they still do today.

Implementation is key. Have to see the details. They should address the choke points -- which would be when that counterflow lane 'zips' back into the regular lanes. With Rockwell, there was not much volume. Not to say it was that small a number of cars, but when compared to the entire Edsa, they'll have to determine how not to cause a big problem at merging and back traffic up the entire length of the zipper lane.

What about fix the bus lanes first.

If they wanna serve the majority, then those are the commuters.

What they should do is to fix the route of the buses first. Lahat papunta ng baclaran. From valenzuela, fairview, etc. Lahat dadaan ng edsa towards baclaran.

This is the only solution i see for the EDSA traffic. Strictly implement the bus lanes. Also remove illegal terminals because they are the major cause of choking points. (For those with private vehicles atleast :p) :D

"pick your poison" ika nga nila

+1 on this. our bus lanes don't make any sense using any sane traffic logic. ayusin muna yung mga `to para mawala rin `yung bottlenecks caused by the stops.

I think they will have a hard time implementing the 3 or more passengers requirement.

It's easy to plan and pass laws but what's tough is implementation & enforcement. I'd love to see they will make this work.
