Just passed through heavy traffic along Edsa.... It took almost 2 hours to get from Ortigas Edsa to Greenbelt. May malaking fire at the Laperal compund near San Carlos seminary ba yun. Traffic is tied up and even firetrucks have difficulty passingthrough the gridlock. Firestarted at noon and as ofa few minutes ago, it's still goingon. Even northbound isaffected, sobetter use alternate routes instead of Edsa.

these squatters take over land that is not their own, endanger their lives, and turn to the gov't for support as if it is the gov't's sole responsibility to take care of them

paulit-ulit na lang. . .

dapat talaga ang binibigyan lang ng right to vote e yung mga legitimate residents na nagbabayad ng buwis para di na protektahan ng mga pulitiko ang mga squatters

The Bureau of Fire Protection raised the “general alarm” over Guadalupe, Makati due to a fire.

As of 11:55 a.m. today, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), through their CCTV cameras, was monitoring the fire that broke out at the Laperal Compound in Barangay Guadalupe Viejo, Makati. Officials said fire trucks were immediately deployed to the affected area and traffic was redirected.

An MMDA official reported that the fire trucks initially faced obstructions due to jeepneys on the road. He said that the jeepneys had to be towed away to clear the roads for the fire trucks.

The Makati Command Control and Communications department said they are receiving reports of minor injuries due to the fire. No casualties have been confirmed.

As of this writing, there is still no confirmed cause of the fire, pending the investigation of the authorities. The “general alarm” status remained unchanged from up until 2 p.m. today.

Meanwhile, the MMDA advised motorists to take alternate routes, especially if they passing though the southbound lane of EDSA near Guadalupe.

For sure madaming holdapers, snatchers at rapist sa area na yan.

Mahirap na magsalita but these SQUATTERS, they don't deserve to be given a temporary shelter.

Makati fire displaces 2,500 families
By Tina Santos
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 22:32:00 04/19/2011

MANILA, Philippines—Around 2,500 families lost their homes in a big fire that struck a depressed community near Edsa in Makati City at around noon on Tuesday.

Initial investigation showed that several residents—including three children, an elderly woman, a pregnant lady and a fire volunteer—suffered minor injuries as they fled from their burning houses in the Laperal Compound at Guadalupe Viejo.

The fire started in the house of a certain Michelle on Bernardino Street and spread quickly to the rest of the settlement.

SFO2 Gerson Moncada of the Makati Fire Department said they were looking at two possible causes: An unattended rice cooker or a computer that overheated.

Quoting Jesusa Magacaling, 52, secretary of the homeowners group in the compound, Moncada said that of the 1,000 structures in the area, 90 percent were destroyed in the fire.

At 12:35 p.m. firefighters declared a general alarm—the highest fire alarm level—which means that all available fire trucks in Metro Manila should help put out the blaze.

The fire was declared under control at 2:05 p.m. but it took another 10 minutes before it was put out.

Around 70 to 80 fire trucks rushed to the site and occupied most of the southbound lane of Edsa, causing heavy traffic in the area and prompting the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to reroute traffic.

A strong breeze that fanned the flames also worsened the situation. Apart from the shanties, billboards in the area also burned.

When the smoke cleared, some 900 shanties had been gutted, leaving about 2,500 families homeless, Moncada said.

Tuesday’s blaze was reportedly the fourth to hit the community which is packed with small houses made of light materials. It is located at the back of the Loyola Memorial Chapels and Crematorium.

The last fire in the area occurred in June 2008, arson investigators said.

This prompted the city government to call on residents to leave the compound and relocate instead to Bulacan and Laguna where there are housing sites ready to accommodate them.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay, who went to the area, said the huge compound was privately owned but that informal settlers had over the years erected clusters of homes that the city government had earlier warned were fire hazards.

“The compound had burned down several times in the past,” Binay said. “It is very clear that it is very dangerous to live there.”

Despite his warning, some residents were seen entering the compound to “scavenge” or check what was left of their houses even though firefighters had yet to contain the blaze.

Ella Garcia, 56, a mother of four, said that perhaps, Tuesday’s incident was just meant to test her faith.

“Maybe there’s a reason why all of these things happened. Look at the timing, today’s Holy Tuesday. Maybe He’s just trying to send us a message,” said Garcia in Filipino, tears welling up her eyes as she described the scene as “hell-like.”

“This is probably our penance,” added Joel Salvador, 47, who said that all he was able to save were the clothes he was wearing and his dog. “At least my family’s safe; that’s good enough.”

Binay, meanwhile, instructed the engineering and the social welfare departments to assist the affected residents. With Anna Bettina Pangalangan

i think that's the trend now. they're burning all the squatter communities. not bec. more corruption money to rebuild them but bec. there's now a pending threat sa environment natin

yan guadalupe was the nth time na ata na nasa news na burning of squatter communities, 3 big squatter communities have already burned down in tondo and manila. others in navotas, cainta, paranaque etc.

and it will continue, I think. better than genocide, I suppose. as u see, the people in the squatters are not even registered sa National Census, so when we say there are a 100M Filipinos to date, that's excluding them. and that is a threat not only to our environment but to national security.

now the question is, how and where can they be relocated? even the Vatican can't build more churches sa mga kabute sprouting communities nila. and we all know na dapat talaga may spiritual or moral guidance sila.

been reading the news lately, there was this jeepney na may sumakay daw na magsyota, and then meron isang magkayakap magsyota sa dulo and another man sa isang dulo. yun jeepney driver eh balisa daw at masama tingin sa kanila sa rear view mirror. then yun sumakay na notice maitim na daw ang mukha nun babae na syota na kayakap. tapos yun pala may sinaksak lang yun babae pinatay nya at niyakap ng holdaper na kunwari syota nyo for not to cause alarm.

kaya na po ka-ruthless ang mga tao na nakatira dito sa communities na'to. even yun random na nangyari dun sa Pilar Pilapil is yet another example, kasi sa riverbanks ang pasyalan ng mga sqautter sa marikina.

kaya we Filipinos who still value dignity and humanity, should be involved in this emerging problem. i'm not saying kill them all, but i am saying be aware. if there is away to help them, then we should find ways. but to keep them in our midst, endangering all of us. hindi na dapat talaga. and that's why wag kayo masyado critical sa Catholic church, if not for them, matagal na tayo nag-civil war.

nagnanakaw kasi ng kuryente ang mga nakatira sa compound na yan. Last year while passing along that area, I saw one of their "linemen" na umaakyat sa malaking poste ng kuryente at nagkakabit ng electrical wire (around 7-8pm) . after a month or two, nasunugan na sila.

May gulo ngayon. There are some ILLEGAL SQUATTERS who barricaded themselves in and refuse to leave the area. They were supposed to move to a Laguna resettlement and were paid 5k each family. There are demolition teams in the area. I hope the city goverment put it's foot down and don't go soft with these people.

The police withdrew after a poorly planned assault. All they did was throw rocks at each other. Why they didn't use teargas is beyond belief...

Violence mars Laperal Compound relocation efforts in Makati
04/27/2011 | 04:31 PM

Violence marred Wednesday afternoon the attempt of Makati City officials to relocate settlers who lost their homes to a fire at the Laperal Compound last week.

Residents hurled rocks at members of the demolition team and at police who were taking part in the relocation efforts, radio dzBB's Nimfa Ravelo reported.

Some members of the demolition team were also seen throwing the stones during the incident, the report added.

A separate report on dzRH radio said traffic near the EDSA-Guadalupe area was snarled while the area was littered with debris due to the exchange as of 4 p.m., the dzRH report added.

Before violence broke out, tension gripped the area as residents defied the city government's order for them to relocate instead of returning to the compound.

City officials had declared the compound a danger zone following last week's fire there.

The residents had blocked the exits to the Laperal Compound and faced off with demolition and relocation teams from the city government.

Many of the residents insisted on returning to the compound even if they got P5,000 assistance from the city government in exchange for agreeing to be relocated.

City officials had offered to relocate them to Bulacan and Laguna provinces, even as they forbade residents from returning because the area was deemed a danger zone.

An earlier report said the residents refused to leave the Laperal Compound because there are no homes in the relocation sites. — RSJ, GMA News
