    Hi. I'm just curious, aside from the usual jack that the car companies include when one purchases a car, what other tools are necessary as mandated by law? We have regular maintenance and we almost never travel out of town, hence I'm wondering if we need to add what's not provided for by the car company. Can anyone give a list? Thanks in advance.

    Well, a jumper kit isn't mandated by law.. but it'll probably come handy if you're the forgetful type

    i don't think the law mandates any basic tool kit (which is strange, because the law mandates a spare tire).
    the law does mandate the EWDs.

    aside from the tool kit that came with the car, i also have the ff:
    tire inflator device (get the more expensive, heavy duty one; hindi ka magsisisi);
    replacement fuses;
    replacement bulbs (one headlight, one parklight, one stoplight, one signal light);
    size 5-6 mm and 12-13 mm box wrenches, or any other combination your car may need (box wrenches are preferable to open wrenches most of the time);
    philips and flat blade screwdrivers ( i don't like the "flippable" one some cars come with.);
    if your car is an auto trans, a pair of jumper wires and if affordable, a battery charger ( if MT, no need, as it's easy to push-start);
    1 or 2 blocks of thick wood, to chuck your wheels with, in case you need to jack it up;
    gloves and a mat of sorts, to use when you need to change a flat or fix something, and clothes, to make you look decent after you change a flat;
    and wipes, to clean your hands with after a dirty job with the car.

    at home, however, i have quite a slew of tools, including an alligator jack..

    useless ang mga tools kung hindi mo alam gamitin

    kapag hindi ka marunong ng basic repairs, siguraduhin na lang meron kang celpon na may load para makatawag ng sasaklolo sa yo

    kung nasa siudad lang naman, pera lang ang kailangan nung mga tulak boys

    Thanks everyone for contributing to answer my query. Frankly, the chances of us having to use any tools at all are small because as I mentioned, we travel only within the downtown city area. Also we maintain regularly. However, because the driver insists that there are no tools aside from the jack that was provided by the car company. If it was up to me, even if I have a complete tool, I wouldn't know how to repair anything in the car. Hence, I was thinking of getting basic once just for the sake of saying we have some tools. And if ever this is mandated by law, I don't want to be victimized by police stopping us just because we have no required tools (if any mandated by law). We do plan to get an early warning device. Long and short nose pliers are easy. However, other tools are a bit complicated. For instance there are many kinds of bolts and screws in the car, how should I know which size to get? It was overwhelming to see the different sizes available at the hardware and I don't plan to get them all.

    So just to reconfirm, the only tool mandated by law to have in each car is an early warning device? Correct?

    Even if its not mandated by law, those tools mentioned should be inside your car. Why? You'll never know when and where your car will break down. Every car is subjected to break down of parts, whether brand new or old ones. Yun nga lang, less prone ang brand new. Tsaka, a driver should be responsible enough to learn kahit yun basic repairs lang at hindi dapat i-asa ang lahat sa casa.

    Regarding the wrenches, these are the basic sizes: 10, 12, 13 (for the battery usually), 14, 17. There's 1 set of these sizes available.

    To put it simply, mas mabuti na meron kang mga gamit at hindi mo masyado gagamitin kesa sa wala kang mga gamit when the inevitable happens.

    Kung basic lang talaga, eto recommended ko:

    EWD
    Fire extinguisher
    Mechanic's gloves - para matawag mong glove box iyong compartment sa harapan mo
    Flashlight
    Socket set 1/2 drive like Bluepoint BLPATSM1225
    Extended wrench handle 18" with swivel 1/2 drive (like Koken 4769-450) - pang hampas self defense na rin. Plus deep socket na ka-size ng lugnuts mo.
    Utility Knife/ Cutter
    Hacksaw for metal
    Open combi wrench 8x10, 8x11, 12x13, 14x17
    screwdriver philips & flat 8"
    Flare nut wrench 6, 8, 10, 11, 12 mm - pang repair ng brake/ ABS line
    Diagonal Cutting Plier 6"
    Long nose Plier 6"
    3-tonne hydraulic bottle jack as backup
    Jumper cable 400A
    5tonne tow cable & 2pcs 2tonne D shackles(adapter since most vehicles have small tow hook in the cassis)
    Vinyl electrical tape
    Spare fuse
    Masking tape
    Trash bag - for waterproofing and emergency storage
    5L Water in a jug
    Brake fluid
    Funnel that will fit the fuel lid
    Wipe Out hand cleaner/conditioner - para hindi ka na magdadala ng sabon
    Lots of rags
    Isopropyl alcohol
    Kleenex tissue box and some medicines/ first aid kit
    Surgical gloves latex
    Spork
    Can opener

    I do lots of long drives so mas mahaba pa dyan ang list ko.

    aren't you taking a big chance by not including the full size line of wrenches, from 5 mm to 36 mm? ... heh heh..
    and only 5 liters of water? is that enough to fill up an empty engine block and radiator and tummy, and still have some for washing?
    i mean, that's pretty exhaustive, for a basic tool kit. but not near basic enough for a trip across the sahara.. so just what is it you do, sir?
    seriously...

    btw, did you forget the tire inflator?
