600 MMDA enforcers receive camera phones

Six hundred traffic enforcers of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) are now manning major roads and streets armed with camera-equipped cellular phones.

MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando said they were issued cellular phone units that can shoot pictures and send them instantly and directly to MMDA Metrobase.

"With the technology available, we cannot afford to be primitive lest we outlive our purpose in life," he said as he announced the success of his MMS-Aided Monitoring System (MAMS) project.

Fernando said with the help of camera phones, reporting and recording road accidents and other concerns can now be done in a snap and help improve the MMDA’s quick response and monitoring system.

He announced that traffic and rescue personnel now arrive in areas where they are needed in 15 minutes or less.

Fernando encouraged the public to make use of MAMS in reporting any concern on traffic, garbage and flooding.

He said all one has to do is take a photo and send it to the MMDA at 0920-9389861 or 0920-9389875. – Michael Punongbayan

Actually that's a valid question because if the camera is 1.3MP or less, it cannot take pictures clear enough to read license plates from, especially if the picture was taken from a fixed position with the vehicle moving away. So that means the camera-celfone has to be 2.0MP or better.

Gaano katagal na ba na-implement ito at ina-announce na ni Bayani ang "success" nitong project? Akala ko kaka-launch pa lang, so paano sya naging success kaagad? May nahuli na bang undisciplined bus driver o smoke belching vehicle dahil sa project na ito?
