3 Manila roads closed Tuesday for Iglesia ni Cristo gathering
    February 27, 2012 7:33am

At least three major roads in Manila will be closed on Tuesday for the Grand Evangelical Mission gathering of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) at the Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park.

Manila police advised motorists and commuters to avoid these roads starting noon Tuesday, according to a report on radio dzBB early Monday.

To be closed in time for the gathering are Katigbak Drive, South Drive, and Independence Road, the report quoted the Manila Police District’s traffic enforcement unit as saying.

Parking areas for motorists with car passes include:

the north wing of Quirino Grandstand (fronting Police Community Precinct) for VIPs
South Drive from Roxas Blvd. to Independence Road for motorists with car passes
stretch of Roxas Blvd. from P. Burgos to P. Ocampo north and southbound lane (one lane only) for buses
stretch of Bonifacio Drive north and southbound lanes from 25th St. to Anda Circle (one lane only)
    Philippine International Convention Center Complex
    Paco Park for buses.

    Open to light vehicles are:

T.M. Kalaw east and westbound (one lane) near the sidewalk from Roxas Blvd. to Ma. Orosa St.
Roxas Blvd. service road from T.M. Kalaw to P. Ocampo
eastbound of P. Burgos over the sidewalk from Roxas Blvd. to Ma. Orosa
northbound lane of Bonifacio Drive over the sidewalk from the 25th St. to Anda Circle.

Bonifacio Drive service road is open to motorcycle riders, the report said.

On the other hand, participants in Tuesday’s gathering will have to be dropped off at Roxas Blvd. southbound, fronting the Carabao statue.

The dzBB report quoted the MPD as saying affected motorists may pass Quirino Avenue to Nagtahan or Taft Avenue to Jones, MacArthur or Quezon Bridges.

Meanwhile, a separate dzBB report said police have prepared adequate security for Tuesday’s event.

It said the Metro Manila police claimed there is no intelligence report of any threat to the gathering.

For its part, the MPD said Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim ordered the deployment of ambulances to render first aid to participants who may need it.

On Sunday, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte appealed to participants in the upcoming gathering not to litter the grounds and clean the place after the gathering.

Although some sectors speculated the gathering is meant to show support for impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona, whose lead counsel former Justice Secretary Serafin Cuevas is an active INC member, Valte said as far as she knows, it is an activity of INC.

“Sa aking pagkakaalam, activity mismo 'yan ng INC [Iglesia ni Cristo] para sa kanilang myembro," she said on government-run dzRB radio on Sunday. –KG, GMA News

MANILA, Philippines – The Metropolitan Development Authority released Monday the traffic scheme for the grand prayer rally of Iglesia Ni Cristo at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila Tuesday.

MMDA said that ahead of the 5 p.m. grand evangelical event, Katigbak Drive, South Drive and Independence Road would be closed to traffic from 12 noon of Tuesday onwards.

It said that all motorists have been advised to take President Quirino to Nagtahan, or Taft Avenue to get to Jones, McArthur and Quezon bridges.

MMDA also said parking areas would be arranged at the north wing of the Quirino Grandstand, while another would be placed at the South Drive from Roxas Boulevard to Independence Road for those with car passes.

One lane parking each at the Roxas Boulevard from P. Burgos to P. Ocampo Street, and Bonifacio Drive from 25thstreet to Anda Cirle, on the other hand, will be made available for buses.

For light vehicles, the MMDA said that a one-lane parking area in T.M. Kalaw Street would be arranged.

MMDA also advised motorists to expect “heavy traffic” along the affected areas.

sometimes there's a wrong description about the news that the media presented on the people, it's not a prayer rally, hey! we are not an activist, it's a grand evangelical mission, a Bible Exposition about the Church of Christ.

Pro-PNoy or pro-Corona? Iglesia ni Cristo rally seen as show of force
    February 27, 2012 6:57pm

The giant Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) gathering in the Luneta in Manila Tuesday is touted as a "Bible Exposition," but observers also see it as a demonstration of their numbers and potential political clout.

A few hundred INC members were notably present in support of Chief Justice Renato Corona at a Supreme Court rally about three weeks ago. Corona's chief defense counsel, former Justice Serafin Cuevas, is a prominent member of the religious group.

The INC offiicially denies any political purpose in the gathering, which will mirror similar Iglesia events on the same day in 18 other places around the country.

“This religious activity is one of the means by which the Church propagates the teachings of God in the Bible that members of the Iglesia Ni Cristo believe to be essential for man’s salvation,” says Bienvenido Santiago, INC spokesperson.

However, political analyst Ramon Casiple sees it as a "show of force" by the INC's relatively new leader, Eduardo Manalo, who assumed the mantle when his father Eraño Manalo died in 2009.

The INC boasts of a voting-age membership of two million, although pollsters estimate it at between one and 1.5 million. In close elections, analysts say, they can spell the difference between win and loss, and famously produced a command vote in favor of the victorious candidate Noynoy Aquino in 2010. Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje was a surprise Aquino appointee, after the INC endorsed him for the position.

While some members may have been at the Corona rally, Casiple doesn't believe the influential group is about to abandon Aquino.

"It is disastrous, I think, na humiwalay or maging antagonistic sa any incumbent president. They have always worked with the incumbent president. This President is very popular, and they cannot afford to antagonize him," says Casiple, who is head of the Institute for Political and Electoral Reform in Quezon City.

Malacañang for its part has professed to be unworried. "For us, it's entirely a religious celebration and, from what we undestand, it's normal for them (to have such gathering in preparation) for their upcoming anniversary," says Palaces deputy spokesperson Abigail Valte.

Hundreds of thousands of INC members from over 4,000 INC congregations are expected to converge at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, or Luneta, on Tuesday.

The INC is considered the largest Christian organization that originated in the Philippines.

Aside from the Luneta, INC members are also expected to gather in the following venues around the Philippines:

    Isabela Sports Complex, Isabela
Jose V. Yap Sports and Recreational Complex, San Jose, Tarlac
    Gloria Town Plaza, Oriental Mindoro
Pili Freedom Sports Complex, Pili, Camarines Sur
La Union National High School Sports Complex, San Fernando City, La Union
    Paglaum Sports Complex, Bacolod City
    Cebu City Fuente Osmeña
    Tacloban City Convention Center
Pagadian City Gym, Zamboanga del Sur
Limketkai Center, Cagayan de Oro City
    Davao Agro-Football Stadium, Davao City
    Gen. Santos City Gym
    La Paz Plaza, Iloilo
    Butuan City Sports Complex
    Odiongan Sports Complex, Odiongan, Romblon
    Puerto Princesa Coliseum, Palawan
    Coron Gym, Palawan
Sta. Cruz Plaza, Sta. Cruz, Marinduque

BTW, humihingi na rin ako ng paumanhin sa mga motorist/tsikot-member natin na maaring maabala namin sa Feb. 28, 2012, pasensya na po kayo, Hoping for your kind consideration.

and about what they are saying, yes, its just pure religious gathering, actually we have invited guest (which called us our "akay") from different religous sect. catholic, christian-born again, protestants, muslims, aglipayan etc. from different status in the society, elites, middle class, working class, rich or poor...and yes may mga pulitikong pupunta, mayor from different municipalities and cities, representative from different districts, etc. pero we will not given them a chance para magpapansin o mangampanya, kung gusto nilang mangampanya gawin nila sa tamang panahon at tamang lugar, we invited them because we believe they want also to hear the teachings and fundamental beliefs of the church, just to listen in sharing our faith, pero kung may iba silang dahilan, konsensya na nila yun, saka di nila magagawa yun, karamihan na pupunta diyan e, ordinaryong mamamayan lang rin na pinaunlakan lang ang aming paanyaya na makinig sa pamamahayag, , that special gathering its not just for us members of the church of Christ but its for all the people, that's why EVERYONE is invited to come and listen,

just watch the news or pumunta kayo sa venue, just listen kung may maririnig kayong statement about giving opinion in the Philippine politics or any patutsada from the minister who will lead the bible exposition (pamamahayag ng mga salita ng Diyos), wala kayong ibang maririnig kundi mga talata lang galing sa biblia at explanasyon nito BOW!
