The fortuner V’s 4WD system is full time or permanent so all 4 wheels are powered all the time. It is equipped with a center differential to enable the 4WD system to be used at all times including high traction surfaces like dry pavement. The other shifter is usually positioned at H which is used for normal daily driving. HL is locking the center differential and behaves like the 4High of a part time 4WD system like my strada. It is only used when the surface allows tire slippage. LL is similar to the 4Low of my strada. It not only locks the center differential but also engages the use of low-range gear that creates more torque at the expense of lower speeds. LL is usually used when going up and down steep inclines, traversing sticky mud and deep sand, and whenever higher torque is needed.
One time my wife and I drove to our dad’s farm. She drove the Fort while I drove the Strada. We needed two vehicles to carry the living room set to our dad’s house. On the way to the house is a muddy portion of the trail. She just drove on with the fort while I had to shift to 4H to be able to get through
