The TRD HiLux arrives with supercharged attitude, kicking up dust, stirring up new business and laying claim to a special spot in the Australian market.

Here comes a 225kW, four-wheel-drive, dual-cab ute with reworked suspension and packaging to suit.

According to Toyota there are no real rivals to this hotshot ute, nothing that combines the performance, the comfort and the function of this HiLux.
The vehicle is, says Toyota Australia's sales and marketing boss David Buttner, the ultimate active ute with unique "tough-truck" experience. "It offers scintillating performance and dramatic styling while still being able to carry a full load and perform a hard day's work," Buttner says.

"The sports tough truck market as defined by TRD HiLux combines strong, powerful styling with traditional HiLux attributes such as durability and real-world practicality."

This is also the second TRD product after last August's TRD Aurion sedan hit the streets. Both are aimed at lifting Toyota's image among performance-minded male drivers. Based on Toyota's big-selling SR5 HiLux, the TRD HiLux is not a cheap package with the 4000S version at $59,990 and the leather-suited 4000 SL at $64,990. But it offers much entertainment.

Chassis engineer Marcus Umlauff, a seven-time ute owner, was chasing down a combination of sport ute, SUV and commercial four-wheel-drive abilities from the chassis. Mechanical development engineer Jonathan Miller was after more power and torque from the four-litre V6; while stylists wanted a distinctive road presence without compromising the donor machine's abilities.

TRD needed to retain the SR5 HiLux's off-road, towing and durability credentials while lifting performance and handling. So added was an Eaton supercharger (providing up to seven pounds of boost) plus water-to-air intercooler, helping the petrol engine deliver 225kW at 5400rpm and 453Nm of torque at 3400rpm on 95 RON – up from 175kW and 376Nm.
Torque is the key for a four-wheel drive and the TRD product has more of that at 1200rpm than a standard SR5.

"You can have as much power as you want but if you haven't got torque you haven't got real-world performance," Miller says.
The kit was developed in conjunction with Toyota and Eaton engineers in the US where it is available as an aftermarket kit for the FJ Cruiser and Tacoma ute.

Here it needed to run 100,000km in durability tests to ensure the factory warranty stood under all conditions.

The result is a pretty quick little truck that jumps from 0 to 100km/h in 7.2 seconds and brings smiles each time the throttle is opened.

For here TRD decided to leave the electric egg-beater whirr of the supercharger as it spools up. There is no hiding from a wide-open throttle in these parts; some may find this tiresome after a time, others will be happy to embrace these tuff-truck sounds.

The drive is fed through a five-speed automatic transmission which is happy in the service of the supercharged V6, and the pair help the HiLux cover ground with a deal of eagerness. (The only quibble would be with first-low range, a bit too quick in delicate off-road spots.)

All this extra power and torque is useless unless there is decent traction and here TRD has reset spring rates, added 17-inch alloy wheels with Bridgestone rubber and Bilstein shock absorbers. Now the combination does not mean the TRD HiLux's tail can't be swung out for circle work, doesn't mean there shouldn't be judicious throttle control on a loose road. But it does mean the ride is far better, flatter and more compliant than on a standard HiLux, it does mean there is better traction and axle articulation in the rough and it does mean the ute sits sweeter under acceleration or braking.

While the on-road experience is entertaining under push-on motoring (though the steering on one example needed more weight) the TRD product also shines off the road.

Here that extra torque and better traction, in particular at the rear, help the TRD HiLux climb and clamber with style.

So the TRD HiLux is a good thing made better on and off the road.
The style changes around the front of the ute, the new wheels and detail changes to the cabin, if minor, help set the ute apart on the road. And if no one notices it is only a matter of opening the throttle and hearing that supercharger winding over.
