Very good news for our local auto workers indeed!!
For the first time in nearly two decades, Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. is selling locally-made passenger cars to further grow its market share to 40 percent this year.
Toyota Philippines rolled out on Thursday its first units of the all-new Vios from its manufacturing facility in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
The company said it would be producing 1,000 units of the new model per month.
As of end 2006, Toyota Phils. holds a 38.4-percent market share of the automotive industry and over 45 percent of the small passenger car segment.
The company completed last year with a total of 38,300 units sold, 9,400 of which were Vios units.
Toyota Phils. vice chairman Alfred Ty said the company is pouring out P1 billion in investments with the local production of its Vios.
"This is to be considered an additional expenditure this year and it will be internally generated," Ty said.
Aside from growing its investments, company president Hiroshi Ito said the Toyoto Group is eyeing a 16-percent year-on-year increase in its exports.
Last year, Toyota accounted for 27 percent of the total Philippine automotive exports with a total of $542 milion.
Toyota Philippines has been taking orders for its all-new Vios from dealers and suppliers all over the country. It will start delivering units by mid-August.
The new model has new developments in both its interior and exterior features and boasts of a sporty design.
According to company officials, the new Vios has a fuel efficiency of 30 kilometers per liter.
About 200 of some 1,200 of its parts are purchased from local auto parts suppliers like Aichi Forging Co., Fujitsu Ten Corp., Jeco Autoparts Phils., EDS Manufacturing Inc. and Koyo Manufacturing Inc.

August 2nd, 2007 10:38 PM #4Diba TMPI has been making locally-made cars for years already???
Heck, they were already building/assembling vehicles locally during the time of the Innova and heck even during the launch of the Corolla Altis 4-5 years ago.
This is nothing new IMHO.
