Toyota to halt output at 1 of its Thai plants

TOKYO (AP) -- Toyota said Friday it will halt production at one of its four auto plants in Thailand and transfer the workers to the other factories in a move the carmaker says is unrelated to political unrest in the Southeast Asian country.

Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Takanori Yokoi said decision to stop production at a Toyota factory on the outskirts of the Thai capital Bangkok was made in November last year. It was part of Toyota's restructuring efforts to boost efficiency and profitability. Vehicle production will stop by the end of May.

The Bangkok plant produces Fortuner sport utility vehicles and Hilux Vigo pickup trucks. Toyota will decide what to do with the plant after it ceases production, he said.

Kyodo News agency said the Bangkok plant has annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles, which Yokoi could not confirm.

Toyota said about 960 workers at the factory will be transferred to the company's three other plants in Thailand.

Violence in the Thai capital has claimed 30 lives and left hundreds injured in the past two months as anti-government protesters occupy the city's commercial district, seeking to oust the government.

The thread title is very misleading. I'm made to think as if Fortuner and Hilux production will come to a screeching halt, but it turns out it's just one factory out of four that's being closed.

Sorry guys, false alarm. Mods please lock up the thread...

May 14 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s biggest carmaker, will shut production at a Thai plant as it shifts output in the Southeast Asian nation.

Toyota will move production of the Hilux Vigo and Fortuner trucks to two of its three other factories in the country from the end of this month, company spokeswoman Monika Saito said by phone today. The carmaker made the decision to strengthen cost competitiveness and hasn’t decided what to do with the facility being closed, she said.

As previously quoted by the TS.

Either sa Indonesia or Vietnam.Gumagawa naman ng Fortuner at Innova ang Toyota Astra P.T plant sa Indonesia kayang walang problema dyan!

Tutal parang kaunti nalang ang bumibili ng Fortuner at Hilux kaya wala naring dapat ipagalala.

IMO, its not to lock up the thread, but instead, to change the title of the thread.

AFAIK, the Fortuner, since the facelift made last year is sourced from Indonesia while the Hilux (Vigo) is from Thailand. Can anyone reconfirm this? thanks.

I think it would be difficult for Thailand to relinquish the Hilux production because the country is very well known for 1-tonne pickup production (just like the Triton/Strada). Just like Indonesia with MPVs.

*Monseratto, thanks for sharing the info.

Checked the V.I.N. on the Fortuner on display at MIAS and the unit was from Thailand.
