i'm planning to buy a toyota corolla liftback. i've always been a mitsu guy. well anywayz, the corolla that i am planning to buy still has a stock engine (i think its a 2T engine). what i want to know is what would be a good engine upgrade for this car? m looking to transplant it with a 4age or 4agze. what i want to know is if i would be able to use the existing tranny or would i need to buy a new tranny. another thing i want to know is what would be the other engines that would fit the car, preferably 1 that has a bolt on turbo upgrade & lsd. if possible, do you have any idea on the price range for the engine.

thanks sa lahat ng mga magrereply!!! more power!!!

it's certainly a good project car platform, but it's age is really really showing na. are we talking about the late 70s or early 80s corollas here? or the levin types?

most engine swaps done today are for FF cars. your target corolla is FR? you must have a very very good mechanic, and money to back you up.

Which Liftback are you talking about?
The RWD TE72 Corolla 2-door Liftback (it actually a 3-door LB)

or the rarer FWD AE82 Corolla 4-door Liftback (it actually a 5-door LB)

I think these were the only Liftback Corollas sold here. The FWD AE82 is rare because Toyota pulled out of the country in 1984.

Toyota's 124hp 1587 cc 16-valve Twin-Cam 4A-GE engine which first appeared in the RWD AE86 Sprinter Trueno and Corolla Levin was later used for sporty FWD Corollas and the mid-engine 1st gen MR2, so I guess this can be an option.
The supercharged 4A-GZE only appeared in the mid-engine MR2 and FWD Corollas, but being a 4A-GE engine it should be compatible with the RWD platforms.

well, i'm talking about the te72 model yata(not sure about the body model)... late 70's or early 80's... yung 2dr liftback na FR.

mga sirs, ano pang other engines pwede, preferably yung madali lang mahanap sa evang or banawe. pati parts na rin sana madaling hanapin.

    thanks n more hps!!!

2T-G. Old School. Or yung lumang 4A-GEU. Kaso luma na rin yun.

Actually kaya naman yung mga bagong 4A-GE or 4A-GZE, but like they said, these are for FWD cars, and much is needed to configure it for RWD. (Though I heard Fil Gulfin has done some. Look up Gulfspeed in Anonas.) Being RWD, you may need a different tranny all together. I have seen a 4A-GE on a yellow 70's Sprinter in Quezon so it is not impossible.

    Here's a TE72 Corolla Liftback with a 16-valve Twin-Cam 4A-GE from an AE86.

The 16-valve Twin-Cam 4A-GE engine was first used in the RWD AE86 which had a similar platform to the older TE72 Corolla Liftback.

Of course the 4A-GE engine should come along with a 5-speed gearbox too, I think the Corolla Liftbacks here only had 4-speed transmissions.

Here's a RWD AE86 Trueno with the newer 20-valve "silver top" 4A-GE engine.

I guess the question is where to buy one and how much.

    Thats good.
Do you know the transmission model of the 5-speed M/T in your TE72?

I read somewhere that both the K-50 and T-50 5-speed M/T can be paired to the 4AGE engine.

AG4, that's the old 4A-GE on the AE86. Sabi ko yung bagong 4A-GE and GZE pang FWD na.

Here you go. These engines were all originally mounted transversely, and were converted for use in the old RWD Corollas.

    The supercharged 16-valve 4A-GZE...

    The newer 20-valve 4A-GE....

By the way, the_wildthing, look carefully at the photo of the AE86 Trueno I posted earlier, thats a 20-valve "SilverTop" 4A-GE engine, not the old 16-valve stock engine.

    Here's an example of a RWD conversion of the 20-valve 4A-GE engine(originally from a FWD AE101 Corolla).
The Project car shows an AE86, but its platform is basically the same as that of the TE72 Corolla Liftback.

mga sirs, i already got theliftback i was talking about... it has a 2t engine paired w/ t50 or t55 tranny... 5speed sya n hydraulic clutch.. my problem now is what differential can i use as an upgrade sa car ko. may nagsabi kasi sakin, just change the internals para maging high speed ratio..
another thing, anong pwede kong gamiting disc brake upgrade sa front n rear... di pa kasi nakikita ng mechanic ko yung car kaya di ko pa alam kung anong rerecommend nyang pwedeng gamiting... sya na magcoconvert nun...
lastly, may mga shops ba kayong marerecomend sakin where i could get the parts, labor, installations n modifications... lalo na for the interior...malamang, magpapalit akong ng dashboard n panel para medyo ok...

thank you thank you very much sa nyo mga bossings...

at that age of car, I would highly recommend a full body work check and repair muna.

the engine prices will surely go down as newer ones get's in (the 20V 4AGE's seems to be best on the market). Sa stock pa lang malakas na ito. Most conversion is on the EFI manifold when the FF are converted to FR....hindi lang ako familiar if the bolt pattern of the tranny (our old existing tranny will) fit to these new engines.

On other matters, if I were you, I wouldn't change the 2T engine you got on hand kung hindi naman sira ito....the 2T series of engines are the lolo's of the 4AGE - overhead cams....and these are road worthy warriors...mas mabigat nga lang kasi hindi pa uso aluminum blocks....pero kung everyday car lang, hindi mo kayang sirain ang makinang ito.

Now if you plan to race, then that's a different scenario...

Ang sa akin lang, kung ang liftback mo ay worth restoring, I would rather restore it to stock...pero kung medyo super laspag at marami ng non-stock parts...e di gawin mo ng lahat ng transplant na kaya ng budget mo....

Yung kasing stock set-up ng lumang oto will command a better resale value than a laspag ng old school.

    Good luck sa project mo.

mga sir, im amaze sa mga suggestion nyo... pwede rin po ba bigyan nyo ako ng mgandang suggestion... i owned a 1984 mitsubishi lancer SL box type... gusto ko syang palitan ng 5 speed transmittion... ano po ba kelangan kong i-modify kung mag papalit ako ng 5 speed transmittion? wala bang effect sa engine yun? i think 1300 or 1400 yung engine ko... tapos is it posible na gawing power steering yung box type ko? then gusto ko rin gawing all disc brakes.. kasi yung 1987 na box type eh power steering na, all disc brake and 5 speed na... gusto ko kasi maging upgraded yung box type ko kasi ipapa repaire ko sya... excellent condition po engine ko.. umaakyat pa ng Baguio at napapatak po ko pa ng 140km/hr...excellent din po aircon nya... maraming salamat po sa magbibigay ng advise sakin... pwede po paki e-mail nalang po sakin yung mga suggestion nyo ito po ak47_trueno2002*yahoo.com Thanks a lot po.. and good luck sa project mo sir...

for the toyota, hindi ganon kahirap magconvert ng FF toyota engine to FR. yes, 2T stock niya, pero i heard ung iba 3/4K daw with k40 trany.. i own a toyota corolla 2 dr lift back. same with the TE72, but mine's limited edition TE71.. I really can't tell the difference between the 2, siguro halos walang difference.. TE71/2 and AE86 magkafamily lang sila, kaya it's not that hard to swap parts.. toyota's T50 tranny can hold up to 200hp NA, pero pag too much torque like the forced induction 4A-GZE or Higher, I suggest you stop using ur T50, masisira lang yan.. if 2T engine ng liftback mo, then T50 stock tranny niyan.
here, take a look at my TE71..
