Words by Christopher Kho | Photos courtesy of Toyota Indonesia
After the new Fortuner and Hilux were launched last August 2011, we knew that their IMV sibling, the Innova, should be making its debut sometime soon. But with Toyota Motors Philippines (TMP) tight-lipped about the arrival of its latest MPV, we had to snoop around to find out what's coming our way.
Our efforts in rummaging through Toyota's regional websites came out empty handed. Even Toyota Thailand, who usually gets their piece of the pie earlier than the rest of South East Asia, showed no clues what it’s going to look like or when it will be launched. Then, a stroke of luck came when we stumbled upon Toyota Indonesia. With the Innova's assembly plant situated in the world's fourth most populated country, it’s just intuitive to launch it first where it’s made. Toyota: The car company that's living in the 90s era. :D
As Korean companies go aggressive with their looks, Toyota stays conservative and generic.

September 8th, 2011 08:41 PM #6I don't think that many people buy the Innova purely for its looks It just so happens that there isn't really much competition in the segment - the Fuzion is uglier (and comes with just a gas engine), and other AUVs are simply primitive.
And going off on a slight tangent, why haven't the other companies made a go at a better competitor to the Innova? It's been years since it was released - surely they could have designed something by now? After all, this segment (AUV) has always been a fairly lucrative one in the Philippine market - unless of course, the Philippine market is simply too small to have cars designed for it (diba bumebenta din naman yung mga ganitong sasakyan sa ibang ASEAN nations?).

The Toyota Innova is still light years ahead when compared to Adventure and the Crosswind.
