Yup, especially if the MT version is retained and not just an AT version as per first post. They can cover all grounds ika nga. Good for the consumers.

    Current Euro-spec engine.

After all, finally the 2.5 will be fitted with an intercooler, which absence was always my main complaint...

The same improvements done in the Argentinian-made Hilux and Fortuner might be expected to the Thai versions of the Hilux and the Fortuner 3.0, getting 171hp and also an increasement in torque.

so yung hearsay na toyota cant bring VNT diesel engine (except for 3.0) here is just marketing strategy? eto, meron na ngayon
they just sell first the old models... with less cost and more gain.. wala pa kase variable vanes dati, pero pwede naman talaga. good move toyota!

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation is getting ready to upgrade the 2.5L D-4D engine in the Fortuner and Hilux line up.

Starting next month, the Fortuner SUV and the Hilux pick-up will be getting an upgraded version of the 2KD-FTV engine (the engine found in the 2005-2012 models of the IMV line). The 2.5 liter D-4D diesel engine has had its old turbo replaced in favor of a variable nozzle (VN) turbine. Toyota has also installed a top-mount intercooler (TMIC) on the upgraded engine, hence the hood scoop.

The results of the upgrade speak for themselves. The new 2KD-FTV (I/C) engine produces 144 PS * 3400 rpm with 343 Newton-meters * 1600-2800 rpm.

To put that in perspective, the old 2KD-FTV engine delivered 102 PS * 3600 rpm with 260 Newton-meters of torque. The larger 3.0-liter 1KD-FTV engine in the Hilux G and Fortuner V variants produced 163 PS and 343 Nm of torque.

By upgrading the forced-induction system on the Fortuner/Hilux, Toyota has given the engine a 41% increase in power as well as a 32% increase in torque. In fact, the torque of the new 2.5 liter VN Turbo Intercooler motor matches the larger 3.0 liter engine.

The upgrade is welcome news, as we've always found the current 2.5G engine in the Fortuner to be overworked when it comes to handling the vehicle's weight. The 2.5L in the current Hilux also felt similar, especially when loaded.

    4x4 2.5L possible
Based on the Toyota Thailand website (the 2.5L VN Turbo engine is already on sale there), the 2KD-FTV is offered in both 4x2 and 4x4 variants for the new 2.5L VN Turbo Hilux. As for the SUV, the new engine is only offered as a 4x2 2.5L VN Turbo Fortuner in Thailand.

The new engine in the Thai market is only offered with the 5-speed manual. There's a possibility that it will arrive with a 4-speed auto for the Philippines, but there are no complete details yet.

    Target: Montero Sport

With the new engine, Toyota is targeting the strong sales of the Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Mitsubishi launched the MS with their own 2.5L VN Turbo Intercooler diesel. Even with the new engine in the Fortuner, the 2KD-FTV is still a bit behind MMPC's 2.5L D-iD VGT, as the Montero delivers 178 PS and 350 Nm.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how the new 2KD-FTV with the VN Turbo Intercooler system will deliver in terms of performance and fuel economy.
To compete with the new ranger?

Even if you're not after speed, the engine upgrade would be more beneficial than detrimental provided prices don't increase dramatically.

I actually prefer the Fortuner's looks over the Montero, but I could never take it seriously or recommend it to my friends when it had the old 2.5 cuz the Montero was just so mechanically superior. Now, the field levels off a bit. The Montero GLS-V still has a better engine, 4-wheel discs, fancy HU, more liveable 3rd row, and (for me) a better interior. The Fortuner on the other hand has leather seats, HID, reportedly a more comfy ride (haven't driven the most recent facelift), and (for me) a better exterior.

The Fort and Everest 3.0 had better punch in the low end compared to the 3.2.

Too expensive. The turbo and manifold alone likely cost between 100-200k pesos. If you're willing, just add an intercooler and retune the motor. Will cost you around 40-50k total, should give you 125-135 bhp.

I agree. A Unichip + tuning, and some intake/exhaust mods can help ease the pain. Kuha ka din ng Alcohol Injection.

Nice to hear they're finally upgrading. My boss is placing his Fort order on hold until this comes out.

Then it sounds somehow senseless to keep the 3.0L available, despite its extra 19hp.

Not really because if under heavy load, a 3.0 is still better than a 2.5 esp in early to mid range rpm despite same power output. Less strain on the engine. Why do you think their is a 2.2 and 3.2 engine for the ranger/mazda?

Plus there's a 4x4 system to deal with.

Unlike in the case of the Montero Sport wherein the 2.5L engine bested the 3.2L engine, hence killing off the 3.2L, Toyota's 2.5L VNT is still the less powerful sibling.

The 2.5 D4-D with VNT, altough having just 144hp instead of 163hp, having the same 343Nm of torque of the 3.0L D4-D, doesn't feel weak into the Hilux and the Fortuner.

There's no replacement for displacement once the going gets tough...
