89 models we're mostly CBU (denoted by the black bumpers mainly). Pretty strong but it's sensitive to heat (i noticed this with ours before... iba yung difference ng performance in the night and day time).

Only the 1.6 GL had a tach. PS and power windows we're only released in the last units along with a XE variant.

Delta Motors used to distribute nga TOyota until the early 80's... they had a showroom in West Ave and in Cubao if i remember it right (i used to ride along with our driver when they'd go over there to have our Corona wedge serviced).

Since this thread was started again by accident...
    I'll answer carlocaraddict's old question...

Toyota ended their contract with Delta Motors and pulled out of the country in early 1984 a month after Ford pulled out of the country.
Their reason? Political and Economic unrest, so they had no plans to resume the contracts.
Of course Toyota returned to the country in 1989 as Toyota Motor Philippines Corp.

I guess this explains why only a few FWD box-type Corollas were sold here.

PS: I don't think the Celica was sold here officially, but Toyota(Delta Motors) did sell the Corona 2000 hardtop which was nicknamed "The Macho Machine".

Yup, iba din radio ng CBU. OEM talaga saktong sakto dun sa naka-drawing sa owner's manual (hindi Alpine). Nasa taas ang tuner, nasa ilalim ang tape deck (in front of the shifter).

Yup, our 89 GLi served us well, until now.

It got us through the Pinatubo mudflow, with hot mud already getting inside the flooring, as we were evacuating our family from Pampanga in the heat of the eruption. We got to Manila with lahar all over the car, with rocks piercing the roof paint (you can see tiny rust points when we washed the car), and the wiper held up inspite the heavy lahar dust.

It also got us home from Baguio, starting there with a faulty alternator. First to go was the AC, then our lights started to fail at NLEX. We got home, but it was a major Alt and AC job right after. The point is, it never failed us and never left us on the road hanging. You just need to talk to her as if she is alive, she even made tampo when we got a new GLi in 96. And it did perform way better than the new one. We kept the first one, we sold the second one. Then we started our affair with the Euros, and it's another story altogether.

namimiss ko na tuloy yung AE92 ko. I could still remember the day we got it, August 24, 1990, opo, grade 1 palang ako nun at bumabagyo nung diniliver samin from Toyota Balintawak. In terms of performance, hindi ako binigo ng AE92, yung AE111 ko eh ubod ng bagal. We sold it last July 2005 to give way to a newer vehicle. Madami na rin sakit yung AE92. Halos every month may nasisira eh. Kakamiss

medyo o.t. lang: muntik na kami bumili nuon ng cbu '89 corolla kaso na buwisit dad ko kasi at that time, meron "hoarding" ng mga cbu units and para makakuha ka add ka dapat mga 10k to 15k. eh barat dad ko, so he bought a "brandnew" box type lancer instead.

i think kaya nagkaubusan nuon ng mga cbu's dahil sabik ang mga tao non sa bagong model. for so many years puro box type lancer and corolla lang ang mabibili non. later nagkaron din ng "hoarding" ang lite-ace. sorry for the o.t.

Medyo na-intriga lang ako kasi when I brought this for a water pump replacement sa casa, one technician commented that my car seems to be the earliest releases of corolla when they returned in 88-89 and he suspects na imported CBU daw ito, as opposed to it being assembled locally. He told me na ingatan ko daw dahil matitibay daw yung mga CBU. Don't know if he's just pulling my leg.

One thing I notice is it does not have that gauge to tell RPM (tachometer baga yun?) compared to other 89's I see around.

Does anyone here still own such model and would you know how to identify whether it's locally assembled or imported? What would be the more noticeable differences.

    Salamat po sa inyong opinion.
    Hello Don Camote,

Since yung Toyota Corolla XL mo is 89 model (EE90 body type) sigurado ako na Completely Built Unit (CBU) sa Japan. 3 klase kasing Corolla lumabas dito yung Corolla 89 na Completely Built Unit, Corolla 90 to 91 kung hindi ako nagkakamali model na Semi Knocked Down (SKD) unit at Corolla na model 91 to early 92 na Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit. XL and XE tipid sa gas powered by 2E engine, 1.3 liter, 12 valve.
