the alphard is really nice... and its design is a long cry from the Euro or JDM Hi-Ace...

though I would expect the JDM Hi-Ace to be released here since box-type vans still have a good market here.

Looks good. Pero Toyota is still not realeasing the top of the line models yet. Commuter van pa lang. Unlike Nissan which targets the high end with their Urvan Grand Estate and caters to the rest with the older Urvan (Escapade)

    Toyota Hiace Commuter unveiled
    All for one vehicle
By Anna Barbara L. Lorenzo, Reporter

    Bring everything and everyone.

That used to be our travelling principle whenever we geared up for a trip on our really old (and now junked) Toyota Hiace. It was about 10 years ago when we first had this monster vehicle in our garage, which was bought secondhand. While it's all fun to be with many people in it all at once, it wasn't exactly a comfortable ride with the Hiace being an old model.

Of course, it's not the vehicle's fault -- and this is exactly why car manufacturers upgrade and repackage vehicles offered to the public.

Just last Friday, Toyota Motors Philippines presented to the media its all-new Hiace Commuter -- all spruced up with new features -- but still the good old "bring-everything-and-everyone" vehicle.

"The Hiace is positioned as a family commuter van. The 15-seater vehicle can be used for commercial and family use," said Daniel M. Isla, Toyota Philippines first vice president for marketing.

The new Toyota Hiace is powered by a 2.5-liter direct injection four-stroke common rail diesel engine that can run a maximum output of 102 Ps per 3,600 rpm. Its maximum torque is pegged at 260 Nm per 1,600 to 2,400 rpm. The four-cylinder engine is turbocharged with a double overhead camshaft.

The Hiace Commuter runs on a five-speed manual transmission with ventilated front and drum rear brakes. The van has a double wishbone suspension with a stabilizer bar up front and a rigid axle and leaf spring stabilizer in the rear.

The new Hiace has a solid and stern exterior look with black front and rear bumpers and painted front grille.

The interior exudes elegance and sophistication with the neatly arranged instrument panel, with the mounted gearshift lever for better access to the driver.

The Hiace driver will be comfortable with the full reclining and sliding seat. The seat configuration is arranged so that two other passengers can join the driver in front row. The second to fourth rows are bench-type seats, with the third and fourth rows having extendable seats. That's comfort for as many as 15 passengers.

Safety-wise, all passengers in the Hiace Commuter are strapped up with the safety belt while the vehicle is also equipped with side door impact beams. Toyota used the latest computer-aided engineering technique to create a torsional rigidity that is 40% higher than the older Hiace version.

The new Hiace was also built to carry heavier and bigger loads of cargo with the low floor height and larger rear door opening. It is also bigger than the earlier versions of the Hiace with a 4,695-mm length, 1,695-mm width, and a 1,980-mm height.

The Hiace Commuter comes in Silver Metallic, White and Dark Green Mica Metallic. It will be available in all authorized dealerships nationwide starting Feb. 7 with a P1.048-million price tag.

Toyota Motor Philippines said this was just the beginning for the new Hiace as the company promised to bring to the domestic market a higher variant, the Hiace GL, later this year.
