Very good news for our local auto workers indeed!!

For the first time in nearly two decades, Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. is selling locally-made passenger cars to further grow its market share to 40 percent this year.

Toyota Philippines rolled out on Thursday its first units of the all-new Vios from its manufacturing facility in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

The company said it would be producing 1,000 units of the new model per month.

As of end 2006, Toyota Phils. holds a 38.4-percent market share of the automotive industry and over 45 percent of the small passenger car segment.

The company completed last year with a total of 38,300 units sold, 9,400 of which were Vios units.

Toyota Phils. vice chairman Alfred Ty said the company is pouring out P1 billion in investments with the local production of its Vios.

"This is to be considered an additional expenditure this year and it will be internally generated," Ty said.

Aside from growing its investments, company president Hiroshi Ito said the Toyoto Group is eyeing a 16-percent year-on-year increase in its exports.

Last year, Toyota accounted for 27 percent of the total Philippine automotive exports with a total of $542 milion.

Toyota Philippines has been taking orders for its all-new Vios from dealers and suppliers all over the country. It will start delivering units by mid-August.

The new model has new developments in both its interior and exterior features and boasts of a sporty design.

According to company officials, the new Vios has a fuel efficiency of 30 kilometers per liter.

About 200 of some 1,200 of its parts are purchased from local auto parts suppliers like Aichi Forging Co., Fujitsu Ten Corp., Jeco Autoparts Phils., EDS Manufacturing Inc. and Koyo Manufacturing Inc.

Diba TMPI has been making locally-made cars for years already???

Heck, they were already building/assembling vehicles locally during the time of the Innova and heck even during the launch of the Corolla Altis 4-5 years ago.

    This is nothing new IMHO.

AS far as I know, the Innova and it's batchmates were imported as CBUs, they were already building/assembling vehicles locally even before that time however, during the time of the said vehicles, during the haydays of Imported japanese junk, the industry flopped and a lot of manufacturers like Mitsubishi (their Adventure has become CBU and the only thing they are assembling was the L300 cab-and-chassis model) and TOyota have been distributing CBU units, notice the glass windows(AsahiMAS rather than Safevue), I may be wrong...

It's good news for the autoworkers at Toyota... except for those standing in the picket line outside the fence... (I pass by there on the way to Paseo for class). Still, it's good that Toyota is renewing their interest in continuing local operations... good for the economy and good for the car market... hopefully the new Vios will stimulate more car sales for everyone.

30 km/l is indeed possible, but that's on the highway. It's more like 10-15 km/l in the city, much like the Honda City... but that's for the manual versions... the Vios still has the ancient and anemic 4-speed for the automatics.

Unfortunately, the new Vios looks quite a bit like a futuristic Honda City... tall, short nose, bubble top, weird dimensions... kung sasabihin niyo mas ***y pa rin ito, sabunutan na!

But it's all for the better. I liked the simple, classic lines of the last Vios, but those mini-Corolla proportions made it tiny inside. This new one looks pretty comfortable.

ABOUT 200 of its about 1,200 of its parts are purchased locally? - I believe - Locally Assembled Cars is the correct nomer. Misnomer ata ang RP-Made Cars for this Vios. 200 local parts - thats about 20% more or less.

    Huh?

Nowadays, it isn't such a big deal that car parts will be sourced from different countries. Heck, isn't the Philippines supplying all manual trannys from Toyotas for SE Asia?

Since the 1st gen Vios was such a very big volume seller (notice the new taxis prowling : MGE, SENGER, etc..) it suddenly made more economic sense for Toyota to assemble or manufacture the new Vios here in the Philippines instead of continually importing from Thailand.

Also, is Toyota really making the Vios from the ground up, right here or are they simply assembling them from CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits from other places like Thailand?

AFAIK, the Innova (esp the J variant) is being assembled here from knockdown kits from Thailand.
