A delegation from the Indonesian Navy moved to late March to Ferrol to visit the ship and learn about their capabilities. However, the government has ruled out the purchase. The auction is now in the hands of Philippines. If definitely take the step to purchase, enter into the select club of countries with these characteristics boats among its fleet. Only nine governments have aircraft carriers. So, the closest to Indonesia is China and Thailand. The latter state has a nearly identical aircraft carrier 'Principe de Asturias'. Ferrol was built between 1994 and 1996 and gave the Thai government in 1997.

^^^Another junket iyan, wala naman balak bumili. Hangang tingin lang...hehehe.

In May 2012 rumours emerged that the Príncipe de Asturias could be withdrawn from active service and placed in a state of "restrictive standby" along with two of the Santa Maria class frigates, due to the financial pressures on the Spanish government.[2] Annual operating costs for the carrier and her air group reached €100 million

^^^ Wow. Unless the DND/PN plans on using the Principe de Asturias for a helicopter landing platform at sea, it should stop whatever delusions it has right now.

AFAIK, the Ferrol being used by the Thai navy is next to useless since it doesn't have jets which can land on it anymore.

First missile-firing warship for PH Navy due to arrive

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Navy will have its first missile-firing capable warship with the scheduled arrival of BRP Ramon Alcaraz, a decommissioned United States Coast Guard cutter the government has bought.

Defense and military sources said yesterday the Alcaraz (PF-16) is due to arrive in the country either by July or August. It has been fitted with anti-ship harpoon missiles.

“Her weapon system is heavier and more sophisticated compared to her sister ship, the BRP Gregorio del Pilar,” sources said.

Aside from harpoon surface-to-surface missiles, Alcaraz is armed with 76mm Oto Melara automatic cannon, two 25-bushmaster guns and heavy machineguns.

The BRP Gregorio del Pilar is only armed with 76mm Oto Melara gun when it was acquired in 2011, with the defense and military leadership spending more to enhance its capabilities.

Alcaraz has already completed its three-day sea trial off South Carolina where it underwent major engine repairs and refurbishment for several months before it was turned over to the Philippines last year.

“With the arrival of our second Hamilton-class cutter, converted into a frigate, the Navy will have its first missile-firing warship,” a military official said.

Alcaraz weighs 3,250 tons, has a length of 378 feet, beam of 43 feet, and draft of 15 feet.

Its propulsion systems consist of two diesel engines and two gas turbine engines, giving it a top speed of 29 knots.

When deployed, Alcaraz, with a total of 167 officers and men complement, will have a cruising range of 14,000 miles and can stay in the high seas for 45 days.

How far are they from our shores? What missiles can reach that far? Can shore-based radar see them over the horizon?

pwede, anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile batteries onshore. but you'll need awacs aircraft or down looking radar sited on top of the tallest mountains to be able to see seaborne targets far away. an elevation of 500 feet allows one to be able to "see" a horizon of 100 miles. so one on top of mountains near baguio (at 5000 feet elevation) will be able to see to 1000 miles. have 10 of those stations, overlapping coverage, then maybe 20-30 missile sites and you don't need ships. even for anti-submarine warfare you can always secretly anchor passive sonar nets so you can then launch air drop torpedoes, or even asroc (kaya lang short range ang asroc). problema lang e bibigyan kaya tayo ng US ng long range radar, yun ang tanong!

current exocet anti-ship missiles can reach up to 180km, with it launched on our shores the opposing side cant claim we overstep our boundary

radio (radar) signals are limited by the horizon, but the reach of such signals depend on the altitude of the site where the antennas are positioned

AWACS is a good thing to have but quite expensive to acquire & maintain, however land based radars positioned strategically to cover the hot-spots will do for the moment

sino ba nagsabi na free? syempre may bayad. ang ibig ko sabihin e kung willing ba si uncle sam na "bigyan" (meaning allow us to hold such technology) ang pilipinas ang long range radar technology, e galit nga si uncle sam sa atin ever since pinaalis ang bases. at lalo na di nya yun ibibigay (again, may bayad ha) kasi pag ginawa niya yun di na natin siya need.

read between the lines ng konti. tapang mo.

^hindi naman galit ang mga kano sa atin dahil pinalayas ang US bases kita mo sila pa nagprovide ng hamilton class cutters (kesa baklasin ang cutter gawing junk na gagastusan pa nila eh di BINIGAY na lang sa atin). the americans voluntarily abandoned clark airbase because of the imminent erruption of mt pinatubo because volcanic ash had adverse effect on jet engines

another proof that the americans didnt hate us for rejecting the US bases agreement was the signing of the new agreement, the VISITING FORCES AGREEMENT

americans are not the only country that we should rely on when it comes to military hardware. if they are not willing to supply us what we need then we can source it out from other suppliers

when you defend a country, you need to display COURAGE

    Agree.

    Wala ng libre ngayon.

If the US cant sell us cheaper weapon systems then go for other suppliers like the Russians, Israelis or Italians.
