Though she's not a Filipino, she served our less fortunate kababayans.

Our posthumous gratitude to you, Julia, and you may rest in peace.

MANILA, Philippines -- The House of Representatives will award its highest decoration to slain United States Peace Corps volunteer Julia Campbell.

Campbell, who was found dead in Batad, Ifugao last week, will receive posthumously the Congressional Medal of Achievement during formal rites in June.

A representative of Campbell’s family and Ronald Tschetter, director of the US Peace Corps, would receive the award on behalf of the slain volunteer, House Speaker Jose de Venecia said in a statement on Friday.

The lower house will cite Campbell for bringing “light and joy to the lives” of many Filipinos.

“She epitomized the ideals of the Peace Corps and of the American people,” the citation read.

The US government and the Peace Corps was told about the award recently and had accepted it with “great gratitude, according to De Venecia.

Campbell, a former reporter of the New York Times, went missing last April 8 during a trek at the mountainside rice terraces in Ifugao. She was found buried in a shallow grave 10 days later.

Juan Duntugan, 25, surrendered to police on Friday and confessed to the killing of Campbell.

An autopsy performed by the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory showed that Campbell died due to several blows to the head.
