Now, I can understand detractors who are quick to diss this ongoing campaign against illegal car sirens, saying the country has far too many serious problems to be focusing on this relatively petty issue. They say it looks as though Noynoy has nothing more substantial to offer us, besides teaching us the art of sitting patiently in heavy traffic. Well, I don’t know about that. But I do know that expunging the very symbol of power abuse is a good way for any president of the Republic to kick off his or her six-year term.

And I wouldn’t call this wang-wang campaign petty—never mind if Noynoy’s publicists are milking it for all it is worth. There is nothing trivial about sending a message, which is that we’ll all be equal now (at least on EDSA). There is nothing trifling about teaching a lesson, which is that public servants need to act like, well, servants. There is nothing inconsequential about removing the biggest singular proof of government officials’ blatant abuse of power and position.

You want to know why this wang-wang issue is such a big deal to everyone? It’s because everyone is sick of seeing the very individuals they elected into public office take advantage of their status and influence.
It’s because everyone is tired of being made to swallow their lot in life while a few privileged ones blare their way to the Senate—or bank, whichever is nearer.
Right on, Vernon!
