Archers offer to forfeit 2004 title
La Salle finds own cager ineligible

Editor's Note: Published on page A25 of the Oct. 12, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

PUTTING scholastic integrity ahead of varsity glory, De La Salle University said it is willing to forfeit its 2004 UAAP men’s basketball crown after admitting yesterday it had been unknowingly fielding an ineligible player in the last three years.

In a statement released by the office of executive vice president Dr. Carmelita Quebengco, La Salle acknowledged that the high school records of a player on its current roster “turned out to be spurious,” and was therefore “neither eligible for admission to DLSU nor for participation as a member of DLSU’s basketball team.”

The statement added that La Salle is willing to accept any sanctions from the league “including returning the Season 67 championship trophy and forfeiting its second place position this season.”

La Salle, however, did not disclose the cager’s name.

“We were strongly advised by our legal counsel not to name the player,” said Lito Tanjuatco, La Salle’s representative to the UAAP Board.

“The school still has to find out who’s culpable,” added Tanjuatco. “In the event that the player is culpable, consequences have to be faced. But there could also be reasons that he’s not culpable. We don’t know yet.”

Though unnamed, UAAP sources said the player was a key player in La Salle’s rotation in the last three years.

The statement noted that the Philippine Educational Placement Test Certificate of Rating (PEPTCR) submitted by the player “was not genuine, thus rendering him academically ineligible.”

The PEPTCR is an exam a student may take “in lieu of, or in the absence of a high school diploma.”

“We were surprised that this happened,” said Tanjuatco, a member of the La Salle board of trustees and board of regents. “But the immediate reaction of La Salle’s highest officials was that we should be transparent and come out in the open.”

Coach Franz Pumaren, who steered the Archers’ title run from 1998 to 2001 and in 2004, decided to keep mum on the issue.

“It is the call of the school,” he said. “I don’t want to comment on it yet. I only learned about it a couple of days ago.”

But Pumaren noted that “we can’t assume that it’s one of the junior [third-year] players.”

The player’s case was uncovered after a local association of registrars nationwide expressed “serious concerns” that some of the “hand-carried documents submitted by students for admission may be spurious.”

La Salle said it acted on its “own initiative” by requesting the Department of Education to verify all the PEPTCR in its school records.

“[La Salle] will uphold the spirit of fair play and true sportsmanship and will never condone cheating in any form,” added the statement.

The case adds to a series of unfortunate events for La Salle this season.

Two weeks ago, the league banned assistant team manager Manny Salgado for life after assaulting Arwind Santos, star of the newly crowned Far Eastern University Tamaraws in Game 1 of the Finals.

The Archers also filed two game protests against the University of the East Warriors, with one match ordered replayed at the end of the elimination round.
any idea kung sino yung ineligible player ng La Salle? they're willing to forfeit their 2004 championship..

sa mga taga DLSU, any insider info on who this player is. Uso naman to sa mga schools. Putting ineligible players sa line-up nila by producing bogus school documents. May nag squeal lang na taga loob na fraudulent yung submitted documents nung player. Kasi malabo taga labas DLSU makaalam niyan.

It was Benitiez. In my POV DLSU should not be praised in this situation. First and foremost, sila ang nagkamali and I am not even sure if they were truly unaware of this situation. They scouted this player and they even talked to his coach and family. Benitez could not act all by his lonesome. Some one with power must have helped him obtain false documents.

Ateneo rejected benitiez because he couldn't even pass the DECS test. How did he pass DLSU and remain there for three years? This just shows grades and academics are thrown out of the window for a promising player.

The act of DLSU of forfieting the championship should not be given praise because this is simply damage control. Instead na iba yung magsabi like the UAAP board, sila na lang. By doing this the outcome would seem they are trying to keep their pride and integrity.

kinakabahan ang DLSU dahil masyado pang mainit sa kanila mga tao dahil sa nangyaring batukan. kaya sila na gumawa ng action bago pa ilabas ng iba.

imbes na iba magsumbong sila na lang para mas maganda yung outcome. this speaks badly about the institution and the administration.

    From PhilStar, today:

"If there’s anyone at fault, it’s the staff in the admissions and registrar’s office," said Pumaren. "It looks like they didn’t do their job. In my eight years as La Salle coach, I’ve recruited more than 10 marquee players who were turned down because they were academically ineligible. This past season, three or four of my recruits were rejected. So if a player not academically eligible was accepted, there had to be something wrong in the admissions process."

Pumaren didn’t disclose who were some of his marquee recruits turned down by the school but sources said they included James Yap and Derick Hubalde.

He-he!

mins after game2, heard this conversation between 2 males, seated a row lower where we were at shang cinema, before the movie screening:

fatso: (pulls out his pda, began tapping with his finger)

thin guy: (began asking individual player scores)
thin guy: panalo rin pala si ISIP, at si ARANA.. among others...

which draw me to conclude; ang pustahan ba ngayon, per individual scores matched against a certain player?
