the reason why this "swine" flu is getting so much media attention is because scientists think this virus could cause a pandemic like the Spanish flu (1918)

    wiki:
The 1918 flu pandemic (commonly referred to as the Spanish flu) was an influenza pandemic that spread to nearly every part of the world. It was caused by an unusually virulent and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1. Historical and epidemiological data are inadequate to identify the geographic origin of the virus. Most of its victims were healthy young adults, in contrast to most influenza outbreaks which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly, or otherwise weakened patients. The pandemic lasted from March 1918 to June 1920, spreading even to the Arctic and remote Pacific islands. It is estimated that anywhere from 20 to 100 million people were killed worldwide, or the approximate equivalent of one third of the population of Europe, more than double the number killed in World War I. This extraordinary toll resulted from the extremely high illness rate of up to 50% and the extreme severity of the symptoms, suspected to be caused by cytokine storms. The pandemic is estimated to have affected up to one billion people: half the world's population at the time.
BUT FOR NOW, THERE'S NO CAUSE FOR ALARM

scientists still DON'T KNOW if this "swine" flu is gonna be the next pandemic

    ok?

but it's better to know what the hoopla is all about than be caught unaware

scientists still don't know how bad this will be

can't say if this will be as bad as SARS... or worse

    yes, bad timing nga

the world economy is bad as it is...

airlines stock are down na kanina

bird flu got a lot of media attention too but H5N1 is hard to catch... only when you have direct contact with infected birds

but this one is transmitted human to human

WHO raises global alert level on swine flu

AP 1 hr 26 mins ago
MEXICO CITY – The swine flu epidemic entered a dangerous new phase Monday as the death toll climbed in Mexico and the number of suspected cases there and in the United States nearly doubled. The World Health Organization raised its alert level but stopped short of declaring a global emergency.
The WHO raised the alert level to Phase 4, meaning there is sustained human-to-human transmission of the virus causing outbreaks in at least one country.

Its alert system was revised after bird flu in Asia began to spread in 2004, and Monday was the first time it was raised above Phase 3.
    from WHO
    http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian.../en/index.html

Phase 4 is characterized by verified human-to-human transmission of an animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus able to cause “community-level outbreaks.” The ability to cause sustained disease outbreaks in a community marks a significant upwards shift in the risk for a pandemic. Any country that suspects or has verified such an event should urgently consult with WHO so that the situation can be jointly assessed and a decision made by the affected country if implementation of a rapid pandemic containment operation is warranted. Phase 4 indicates a significant increase in risk of a pandemic but does not necessarily mean that a pandemic is a forgone conclusion.
