Gilas lines up games vs PBA stars, Kazakhstan national team as final tuneups before FIBA Asia
In trying to stay sharp before the FIBA Asia Championship in August, the Philippine national men’s basketball team has set up a pair of tuneup games days prior to the tournament’s opening.
The SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team will take on a selection of PBA star at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on July 23 before facing fellow FIBA Asia participant Kazakhstan at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum on July 26th, a mere five days before FIBA Asia Championships tip off.
Both games are likely to feature the final Gilas lineups for the FIBA Asia tournament as they are scheduled after the July 12 deadline of submission.
Also on tap for Gilas team is a training tour in New Zealand, where they are slated to face several pro teams as well as the New Zealand national team.
The New Zealand team, nicknamed the “Tall Blacks” after their famed “All Blacks” squad in rugby, finished 4th in the 2002 FIBA World Championships, but has finished no better than 10th in either the Olympics or World Championships since.
The FIBA Asia Championships are scheduled for August 1-11 with games to be played at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City and at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Vito Cruz, Manila.

Gilas pushes Tall Blacks to limit, loses by one point on late questionable call
Gilas pushes Tall Blacks to limit, loses by one point on late questionable call | InterAKTVThe Philippine national men’s basketball team capped its New Zealand campaign the way it wanted – playing splendid basketball against A-grade competition like the Tall Blacks, the New Zealand national team.
The Gilas Pilipinas players pushed their world-class counterparts to the limit before dropping a heartbreaking 77-76 loss after a questionable call from one of the referees who officiated the game.
“We lost by one point on a very questionable call on a loose ball situation with only four seconds left,” wrote Reyes in a text message to InterAKTV.
“It should have gone overtime. Sayang.”
Nevertheless, the Filipinos ended their campaign on a strong note, playing with a lot of energy and determination against a crack team that had previously competed in the Olympics and World Championships.
Reyes was pleased with his wards’ performance, particularly the comebacking Marcus Douthit, who returned to action after resting the previous two games due to a nagging back problems.
“The guys really played well, especially Marcus. This is a great way to end this tour,” added Reyes.
The members of the Gilas Pilipinas squad return home to continue their buildup for the FIBA Asia Championship.
They play two more tune up matches – against a PBA select team and against Kazakhstan’s national squad – before gearing up for the August 1 to 11 tournament that serves as a qualifier to the World Cup in Spain next year.
Not bad.![]()

FIBA Asia: Malaysian center dies during game in China
Tragedy struck the Malaysian national basketball team last Monday, just days before the opening of the 27th FIBA-Asia cage championships, after one of its players suddenly passed away.
Jacky Ng Kiat Kee, a six-foot-five center, collapsed and died after suffering what is believed to be a heart attack during an invitation tournament in China on Monday, just three days prior to the start of the Manila cage spectacle.
In a report posted by the Kuala Lumpur-based publication New Straits Times, no less than Malaysian Basketball Association secretary-general Chey Tat Woon confirmed the death of the 25-year-old center.
According to Chey, Ng was seated on the team’s bench during the match in Jianling when he suddenly collapsed at around 4:30 p.m. and was declared dead less than three hours later while being treated at a local hospital.
