San Mig hopes to get Slaughter



With Rafi Reavis and Yancy de Ocampo now in the twilight of their careers, San Mig Coffee is hoping to get Greg Slaughter in the PBA Rookie Draft in the hope of providing youth to its ageing frontline crew.

That is if the 7-footer former Ateneo star is still available by the time the Mixers pick.

The Mixers will pick No. 2 overall, and its selection will depend on who sister-team Barangay Ginebra San Miguel picks.

The Kings, out to bounce back after failing to win a title this season, own the No. 1 pick.

“Hopefully when it’s our turn Greg is still there,” said Rene Pardo, San Mig Coffee representative to the PBA Board of Governors. “If not, we’ll still go for a tall player to boost our frontline. It’s obvious that we need to improve in that area.”

Pardo understands that Ginebra is also considering the former Ateneo and Smart Gilas Pilipinas standout, but Pardo explained that Slaughter’s style of play will best fit San Mig’s system under coach Tim Cone’s Triangle Offense than the Kings’ running game.

Case in point was when Cone was still handling Alaska where helped polish the moves of the 6-foot-7 Sonny Thoss.

Thoss has blossomed into one of best big men in the league since being drafted No. 5 overall in 2004. With the help of Cone, Thoss is now 10-time All-Star.

Aside from Slaughter, Ginebra is said to be interested in Ian Sangalang, a 6-foot-7 forward who once played for San Sebastian. Sangalang is considered by many as a complete player as he can score inside and outside aside from being a solid defender.

However, if the Kings decide to get Slaughter, Pardo said that it’s up to the coaching staff to decide which player to pick. Sangalang is an option, as well as 6-foot-7 Raymond Almazan of Letran, 6-foot-5 Justine Chua of Ateneo, 6-foot-9 Isaac Holstein from West Virginia State University and 6-foot-8 John Usita of Shoreline Community College in California.
