    Marquez accepts Top Rank deal

HOLLYWOOD – Juan Manuel Marquez has accepted the revised contract from Top Rank, leaving the ball in the hands of Golden Boy whether or not it would allow a third fighter between the Mexican champion and Manny Pacquiao.

“He has accepted the offer and had his attorney send it to Golden Boy Monday night,” said Top Rank chief Bob Arum yesterday.

Arum and Marquez sat down over the weekend in Las Vegas, and talked about the initial offer Top Rank gave the reigning WBO and WBA lightweight champion regarding a third fight with Pacquiao in November.

Arum said Marquez sought some revisions in the contract. He got a copy of the revised contract last Monday, and it did not take long for the 37-year-old counterpuncher to stamp his approval on it.

The contract states a catchweight of 144 lb, with Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title on the line, and that Marquez will get a guaranteed purse of $5 million, the same purse that was offered Shane Mosley against Pacquiao.

“Now, Golden Boy has to match offer,” said Arum.

Golden Boy, locked in a bitter dispute with Top Rank over various issues, can match the offer and find someone else to fight Marquez and promote that fight. If they don’t, then it’s green and for the Pacquiao-Marquez trilogy.

Arum said the fight would take place Nov. 12, and no longer Nov. 5 which he earlier announced, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Arum originally wanted Nov. 12 but it was moved to Nov. 5 because of an Eagles concert at the MGM. Arum, however, said the organizers of the Eagles concert had agreed to switch dates with Top Rank.

If Golden Boy doesn’t match the Top Rank offer to Marquez, Arum said the fight will be officially announced soon, and soon means the next few days. Then it’s on, starting off with the press tour probably in the third week of August.

The third fight between Pacquiao and Marquez will come right after the World Series.

“Everything was done right,” Arum said.

The Los Angeles Times yesterday, however, reported that Golden Boy might match the offer, and hand Marquez a similar $5 million offer to fight super-welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez instead.

“I’m sure HBO would be on board,” Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer was quoted as saying, meaning it shouldn’t be a problem for them to come up with the guaranteed purse.

“I just have to wait. But I want the third fight with Manny Pacquiao,” Marquez told Pinoy scribes.
Marquez doubts that Alvarez, the champion at 154 lb, may not be able to come down to 144 lb as the Top Rank offer states.

“I want Pacquiao. It’s the fight I’ve been looking for,” he said.

Kung ako kay Pacman, wag na lang. He has nothing to gain (except more moolah) but more to lose.
