Fisher new addition in NBA selection vs PBA, Gilas

Manila, Philippines - The stellar NBA cast playing Smart Gilas Pilipinas and a PBA selection in a blockbuster two-game series on July 23 and 24 at the Araneta Coliseum will have another experienced hand in the fold – five-time champion Derek Fisher.

The 36-year-old Fisher will join Los Angeles Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant and former NBA Rookie of the Year Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets in the eight-man star-studded NBA squad seeing action in the event dubbed the Ultimate All-Star Weekend and organized by the MVP Sports Foundation.

“Derek Fisher, yes,” said MVPSF president Al Panlilio, who confirmed Friday night at the Big Dome VIP room that the much-anticipated two-day basketball extravaganza would push through as planned.

Fisher will thus be the seventh member of the team along with Bryant, who will coach the squad, Paul, Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings, James Harden of the Oklahoma Thunder, DeAndre Jordan of the Los Angeles Clippers and Derrick Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Panlilio said the eighth and final member of that team will be announced soon but there were reports that the spot would be a toss-up between reigning MVP Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls and two-time scoring champion and former ROY awardee Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma Thunder.

Chot Reyes, the Talk N’ Text coach who is executive director of MVPSF, said the eighth man would be a bigger fish.

Fisher could join the three-point shooting side-event as he was known for during his colorful 15-year NBA career highlighted by five championships with the Lakers and perhaps give Filipinos some advice on how to be a good basketball ambassador on and off the court.

Meanwhile, Williams and Harden twitted they’re excited to go to the Philippines.

Williams, who was drafted second overall rookie pick by the Wolves in the recent NBA draft, said: “Philippines going to be crazy next week!” while Harden twitted : “I’m going to be in the Philippines next week!!!!!!!!! Excited!!!”

Except for Bryant, who will be fetched in Shanghai, China on July 22 on the eve of the games, all the NBA players will arrive on July 21.

All of them, again except for Bryant, will be given a tour of some popular destinations in the country including the island paradise of Boracay.

“Its part of the package, we will give them a vacation to remember in Boracay,” said Reyes.

The event, which was brought to the country by Smart, PLDT, Meralco, Maynilad, TV5, Metro Pacific Tollways and Investment Corp. and Philex Mining, will feature Kobe and the gang against the Chot Reyes-mentored PBA team at 7 p.m. on July 23 and versus the Rajko Toroman-coached Smart Gilas at 1 p.m. the following day.

“The MVP Sports Foundation takes pride in bringing US basketball superstars and world-class basketball entertainment to Filipinos with the Ultimate All-Star Weekend, which we hope would generate funds for our MVPSF programs,” said Panlilio.

“It is also the gift to the Filipino basketball-loving public by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan,” he added.

James Yap and Marc Pingris of BMeg, Mark Caguioa and JC Intal of Ginebra, Arwin Santos and Rabeh Al-Hussaini of Petron Blaze, Ryan Reyes, Jason Castro and Larry Fonacier of Talk N’ Text, Sonny Thoss and LA Tenorio of Alaska, Sol Mercado of Meralco, Gary David of Powerade, Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine and Danny Seigle of Air21 will comprise the PBA team.

Talk N’ Text’s Kelly Williams, Jimmy Alapag and Ranidel de Ocampo, Meralco’s Asi Taulava and Air21’s Dondon Hontiveros will suit up with the Nationals, who are on the thick of preparations for the FIBA-Asia Championship in Wuhan, China.

Smart Gilas’ other members are naturalized Marcus Douthit, captain Chris Tiu, co-skipper Mark Barroca, JV Casio, Mac Baracael, Marcio Lassiter, Japeth Aguilar, Chris Lutz, Dylan Ababou and Jason Ballesteros.
