back in the old day, my first bike was a bmx 20" 44x16t freestyle bike....yes its heavy siguro double the weight of my current 26 mtb , because im a highschool student wala ako pang upgrade ng parts
80 km on an offroad on a bmx wt a 44x16T and weigh 25-30kgs 32-35deg temp..torture yan..sa 80 kms may bundok na kasama siguro mga 4-6km uphill..we travlled 6hrs, one stop over just to drink water..wala kaming dalang tubig not even a hydration bag
no tools, no helmet, yung pang bahay na damit lang suot namin + converse sneakers..hehehe
im old, my mind is still willing but my flesh is not...so upgrade lang ng upgrade, i dont care what people say if mahina tuhod ko, at the end of the day im happy on what im doing..heheheh

Saw this bike on PMTB, Merida thread I think. Nice bike, hope it serves you well.
Anyway bro dun sa tanong mo na whats wrong with high end parts with a slow rider, the usual mindset kasi for biking (or any sport nga), is that you buy good gear to improve your performance. Iba siya sa pangongolekta ng gundam or pagpapapogi ng kotse since a bike is traditionally for exercise, and there's just some resistance from purists about the whole idea that there are a lot of hobbyists nowadays who just buy bikes as playthings/upgradeables.
But to each his own nga, and pera mo naman yan. At the end of the day, as long as you're happy, who cares what others think right?

i have a spare plastidip, and bought a 2nd hand zee brake kit from Ph,
mtb parts price in PH are really cheap, zee brake kit here cost around $400=P16000...nakuha ko lang yung zee P 6000 pesos lol..sino ba naman ang hindi mapapa upgrade..lol..
so far brake and rotors lang ang inupgrade ko, SLX rotors and Zee brake
next yung pedal naman kasi hindi ako comfortable sa m505, madulas
and i found a 26 crank brothers cobalt bnew at ebay, wla akong plan to upgrade my current wheelset kasi gusto ko muna laspagin, but nakka enganyo yung price ng CB...$350 pa lang and less than 3hrs to go
this coming saturday pa dating ng brake kit...really excited to put it on and test it..
chainreaction.com still pricy compared to ph prices..lol

If you want a bike just for the sake of having a bike, pwede na yan. Good enough for biking around the village, or taking a trip around UP Oval.
But in the grand scale of things, those are very very low-end mountain bikes. Kung hindi niyo naman balak magupgrade or magtrails, you don't need any of the high end stuff.
I think though that 11k is a bit expensive. You can get an 8k bike na halos ganyan din ang specs. Basic lang din naman edi get the cheapest. Have you looked around Quiapo and Cartimar?

One more thing to note, pinakaimportante in buying a bike is fit. Ano ba height niyo ng friend mo? Yung size 17 na bike na tinitingnan mo is for people na 5'6-5'9 ang height.
For most women, you should be getting size 14.5 or 16 at the most.
There are bikes specifically for girls because of their smaller frames. Please take that into consideration since a bike that's too big for you is gonna be hard to use.

Your choice if you want to stick with a 17" frame. Pera niyo naman yan. Basta ako I advice for you to wait for a 14.5" frame if you're just 5'2". Going bigger will make it uncomfy for long rides.
Assembling isn't really recommended for that budget. I don't know the specs of that 6k bike you saw so I can't comment on it.
Anyway, in general, you should be looking for the ff:
- size 14.5 frame
- Shimano groupset (either Altus or Acera fits your budget)
- Hydraulic brakes (preferably Shimano but Tektro Draco or any other Tektro hydraulic will also do)
Everything else kahit ano na that comes with the built bike. Usually XCT fork yan, then generic tires/rims pati cockpit/seatpost/saddle.
You don't need high end components naman if it's just casual riding, just a durable drivetrain, reliable brakes, and a frame that fits you.

While you're at it, bat ayaw niyo magfolding bike nalang? Di naman kayo mamumundok so a folding bike should be more useful for you. Sa 10k-12k may matino nang folding bike.

A basic bike like that will allow you to trail occasionally, but then again even a BMX can do light trails.
The difference is the durability and ease. XCT is a crappy fork (had one before on a Specialized built bike). Almost no travel (springs too stiff), heavy, and the coils themselves aren't built for heavy duty use. Low-end Shimanos are also far from the precision, weight, and durability of the higher end Deore/SLX/XT models.
If you start to get serious about biking, best to build your own bike in the future. Masyado low end ang kahit anong bike sa options mo to be a potential platform for future upgrades. It's like getting a Wigo then adding a turbo in the future. Better to just sell the Wigo and get an Impreza WRX and use that as your base.
Anyway, we're getting ahead of ourselves in this discussion. Going back to your intended use which is casual biking, like I said, as long as it has a 14.5" frame, Tourney/Altus/Acera drivetrain, and hydraulic brakes, ok na yan.
The frame weight will not vary much with those low end bikes. Lahat sila alloy but lahat naman sila mabigat compared to decent budget frames like Vision, KHS, and GT, and moreso compared to expensive frames like Giant and Merida. Just choose the frame whose looks you like best. Wag ka rin bibili ng pekeng frame. Better low-end na orig kaysa pekeng Giant.
So far Trinx makes pretty decent low end bikes. SGM Hurricane has been around for a while na rin and a lot of people have it. However, bottomline is that the brand of the frame doesn't matter much - what matters is the specs and price.

I remember the XCT fork na binili ng isang kasamahan ko. Kakabili palang daw, di na gumagana yun lock out kaya walang play yun fork. Ayun bumili nalang ng generic fork![]()
Wala eh, kulang daw siya sa budget. Sabi ko nga, sana kahit XCM nalang binili niya eh matino-tino naman ang XCM. For temporary use lang naman daw sana hahaha!
Hmmmm, wala bang EB trail ride dyan?![]()
