For a basketball player, nothing is better than being labelled as the next best thing to MJ. That is a compliment if you ask me.

Maybe what you really mean is unlike MJ who pioneered a new brand of basketball(although close to Dr. J in aerial assaults) with competitiveness never before seen. It's quite possible the Lakers are milking Kobe for every last cent they can; with his announcement people will think all sort os excuses to watch the games: this is the last time we'll see him play live, we owe him support for giving us 5 rings, etc. etc. i don't see anything wrong about it, no matter what your feelings are for Kobe(i don't particularly like how he yells at his teammates when the game's not going their way -- way to go, team captain), he was a damn good player at his prime.
