Sanofi halts trial of COVID-19 drug after tests

Sanofi says neither it nor its American partner in developing the drug, Regeneron, 'envisage further clinical tests of Kevzara for the treatment of COVID-19'

French pharma giant Sanofi said on Tuesday, September 1, that international Phase 3 clinical tests of its Kevzara drug for serious COVID-19 cases had proved inconclusive and it was halting the trial.

The Phase 3 test – normally the last before official approval for use – "did not meet the primary or secondary evaluation criteria compared with a placebo, and in both cases, compared with established hospital care," it said in a statement.

Sanofi said neither it nor its American partner in developing the drug, Regeneron, "envisage further clinical tests of Kevzara for the treatment of COVID-19."

Although Kevzara "did not give us the results we were hoping for, we are proud of the work done by our team," Sanofi global research head Dr. John Reed said in the statement.

As of 4PM today, September 1, 2020, the Department of Health reports the total number of COVID-19 cases at 224,264.
DOH likewise announces 464 recoveries. This brings the total number of recoveries to 158,012.
A total of 3,483 confirmed cases are reported based on the total tests done by 93 out of 110 current operational labs.
Note: Of the 3,483 reported cases today, 3,191 (92%) occurred within the recent 14 days (August 19 - September 1, 2020). The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were NCR (1,689 or 53%), Region 4A (639 or 20%) and Region 3 (213 or 7%).
Of the 39 deaths, 34 (87%) in August, 2 (5%) in July, 1 (3%) in June, and 2 (5%) in May. Deaths were from NCR (18 or 46%), Region 4A (9 or 23%), Region 6 (5 or 13%), Region 7 (1 or 3%), Region 5 (1 or 3%), Region 3 (1 or 3%), Region 2 (1 or 3%), Region 10 (1 or 3%), ROF (1 or 3%), and BARMM (1 or 3%)
There were 38 duplicates that were removed from the total case count. Of these, 11 recovered cases have been removed.
Moreover, there were three (3) cases that were previously reported as recovered but after final validation, they were deaths.
These numbers undergo constant cleaning and validation.
