Alcohol-based disinfectants are also effective, but soap still reigns supreme when beating the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) responsible for coronavirus disease 2010 (COVID-19).

According to chemistry professor Palli Thordarson, soap works well on COVID-19 and most viruses because the virus is a self-assembled nanoparticle in which the weakest link is the lipid (fatty) bilayer.

“The soap dissolves the fat membrane and the virus falls apart like a house of cards and ‘dies’, or rather, we should say it becomes inactive as viruses aren’t really alive,” the professor said.

Thordarson explained that while alcohol-based disinfectants have similar effects, they are not really quite as good as normal soap. “The antibacterial agents in these products don’t affect the virus structure much at all.”

Soapy water is totally different, Thordarson said, because it “competes” with the lipids in the virus membrane.

The soap is effective in dissolving the glue that holds the virus together. It also outcompetes the interactions between the virus and the skin surface because soap contains fat-like substances known as amphiphiles structurally similar to the lipids in the virus membrane.

Most viruses consist of three key building blocks: RNA, proteins, and lipids.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends washing hands with soap and water.

“Hand washing reduces the amounts of all types of germs and chemicals on hands,” CDC said.

Thordarson also reminded people to thoroughly rub and soak the hands.

“The skin is quite rough and wrinkly which is why you do need a fair amount of rubbing and soaking to ensure the soap reaches every crook and cranny on the skin surface that could be hiding active viruses.”

With that being said, you may now stop hoarding alcohol and start washing your hands with soap.

With the information that the government can have if they were serious about this - remember it all starts from the top - they could have asked for help/ suggestions and gathered information already how to possibly combat this as early as late January.

Jan 20 dito sa tsikot pinag-uusapan na scenarios na pwede kumalat sa MM lalo na at ang daming Chinese tourists at POGO workers na pumupunta dito sila hindi pa nila naisip yun with their gargantuan intellegence fund?

February pa lang nag-increase na kami stocking level sa inventory sa warehouse because we anticipated na yung problem sa raw mats and supply issue which again tsikot even discussed as well. Ang liit lang company namin compared sa government na ang daming best and brightest minds and you are telling us them not planning ahead is excusable? I don't buy that.

What gets my goat furter is that lots of paid trolls (not specifically here in this forum) are coming out in social media telling us to be more sympathetic to the government. Giving excuses like -- the man in Malacanang is already an old, overworked, guy and should be forgiven for his shortcomings and short sightedness. Sheesh. He should just retire and call it quits.

Others just can't stop singing praises and hallelujahs saying the president is still the best. Right. I wonder where they all left their brains.

Here in our building, temp checks for everyone entering, even people inside vehicles are subject to temp checks before being allowed inside. I agree temp checks are better than NO temp checks.
