Pacers Myles Turner on foul trouble: 'They need me out there'

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers need Myles Turner on the floor, not in foul trouble.

Turner is walking a fine line this season between playing aggressively and avoiding fouls that are costing him playing time. It’s still a work in progress.

Turner was in a nice rhythm through the first 17 minutes of Saturday night’s game, playing well at both ends of the floor and helping the Pacers build a 12-point lead over the Boston Celtics. But then came foul trouble. For the second time in the game, Turner was called for an offensive foul while setting a pick on Celtics guard Kyrie Irving. Less than two minutes later, Turner committed his third personal foul, this time for charging while making a drive to the basket.

Pacers coach Nate McMillan had little choice but to bench his starting center for the remainder of the half. McMillan was forced to sit Turner again for seven minutes in the third quarter, after he committed his fourth foul.

Without Turner on the floor, the Celtics took the lead for good, outscoring the Pacers 37-16 in the third quarter and ending the Pacers’ five-game winning streak with a 108-98 decision. Despite the foul trouble, Turner still led the Pacers in scoring with 19 points and added six rebounds. But part of Turner’s continued growth as a 21-year-old player is learning to avoid foul trouble more often, so he can become more consistent.

Turner has committed at least four fouls in seven of the 13 games he has played, including the last three. During situations when he could have been playing, Turner has been watching.

“You can never really catch a rhythm,” said Turner. “These past two or three games, I’ve finally started feeling like myself again. I’m feeling good. But I got to step up and be better in that situation for my teammates. They need me out there.”

Would the Pacers have won had Turner avoided foul trouble? We will never know. But the Pacers were plus-five in point differential for the 31 minutes Turner was on the floor.

In fairness to Turner, he got a raw deal on two calls Saturday night for setting screens. Not only is Irving a great player, he is not a bad actor. The instant Turner and Irving made contact, Irving acted as if he had collided with a vending machine. McMillan said a referee told him later that those two fouls against Turner should not have been whistled.

“They were questionable calls,” said McMillan. “Kyrie was just throwing his head back, running into the screen. The official called that. He told me that he blew those calls. I guess he looked at it at halftime and said we were right. That’s a play that 10 years ago, guys were getting away with, called a flop. I thought the official was reacting more to the so-called contact, as opposed to, 'Was Myles set?' It happens. It’s a tough call to make. Kyrie did a good job of selling.”

What did Turner say, after hearing the referee admit he had erred?

“It’s just rubbing salt in the wound, man,” said Turner.

However, Turner then smartly paid the referees a compliment. Getting on their bad side will not help.

“The refs have a tough job,” said Turner. “I can never really just come down on refs. I understand, but as a player it’s frustrating. Sometimes your emotions show a little bit, but I got all the respect in the world for these refs.”

The seven games that Turner missed early in the season with a concussion set him back. But now he looks confident and in game shape, ready to play consistent basketball. That is, if he can avoid foul trouble.

Nauna pa ngang pinatalsik ang coach ng Memphis (David Fizdale) dahil sa reklamo ni Gasol sa hindi nya paglaro sa 4th quarter vs. Nets (may clash na daw itong dalawa since the former was hired as head coach.

Over rated si ball, maganda lang gumawa media bureau ng LA,both UCLA and LAkers kaya parang superstar pa din tingin sa kanya.Plus, all in kasi sa kanya si magic johnson,as GM,po-protektahan ng LA Media siyempre since he is a legend of LA.Kung PG lang din, sana si smith jr. na kinuha ng lakers instead of ball...pero yun nga...hype sells and LA fans do buy the hype which is all ball at this point in time.Hype sells...but until when ang patience ng LA fans?Mas productive pa si clarkson as compared kay ball eh.

even himself i guess knows his terrible shooting stroke. why in this world he's not making some adjustment now? most critics are making fun of it, no issue if his shooting percentage is tolerable!

Re: Ball's shooting, he can still improve. Even MJ had a mediocre jumper when he started. But he has to change his form and training to do something that drastic can only be done in the offseason. Which looks like another long one for LAL. I'll be surprised if they make the playoffs.

    ^ no way that's a bad shoe

The adidias crAzy explosive is one of the best pair of shoes around. Support, cushion, and traction is way up there among ballers

Random thought lang,...maybe its with the design of the shoes these days kaya andalas ma roll yung ankle or worst, ala paul george and hayward. Before, when the shoes were hi-cut lang and made of somewhat hard leather, bihira if ever ang mga ankle injuries...and to think mas physical nga dati ang laro.
