August 29th, 2009 09:51 PM #1What's the first computer you've ever owned? What's the first operating system you've ever used?
The first computer my parents owned was a generic IBM-compatible (forgot the brand) with an Intel 386DX processor, 8MB RAM, 80MB hard disk, Genius EasyMouse, and 3.5" plus 5.25" floppy drives.
Its operating system was Windows 3.1; the first OS I've used. It was all downhill from that point on.
Recently, I resurrected Windows 3.1 via DOSBox in this Compaq M2000 I'm using right now.
Windows 3.1 on Windows 7

Apple ][ Compatible
40 & 80 line video adapters
green CRT display
twin Super5 5.25" floppy drives
Mocking Board sound card
Joystick w/ two buttons
Looks somewhat like this:
(feel so old)
Aside from playing games on it, I also used it for word processing on Wordstar (I don't remember which version though) and an early version of PrintShop for stuff like banners, etc. I even had an Epson LX-80 dot matrix printer to print the documents and stuff. Even featured a "tractor drive" for continuous forms.
It looks very much like the printer in the picture below.

As far as home computers.......
Second-hand Commodore 64/128 back in 1985. Wasn't impressed with it. So, I replaced it with a Tandy 1000SX back in 1986. The Tandy 1000SX was IBM-cmpatible, pretty good with 16 colors (vs CGA with four) and 3 channel sound. But, I was impressed with the Commodore Amiga. I sold my Tandy 1000SX in 1987 and bought a used Amiga 1000 following that up with the Amiga 500 and still later the Amiga 2000 and 2000HD.
I also bought an Apple IIGS around 1988 and an expensive used Mac IIcx in late 1990. But, the Amiga (final model was the A1200) was my primary platform until 1995.
My first "real" pc was a used Leading Edge 386SX-20 back in 1991. I assembled my first DIY pc in 1992 (AMD 386DX-40, Soyo motherboard, 4meg ram, Cirruslogic SVGA card, CL Soundblaster, Win3.11).
If there was a time when I was a bootlegger and a zealot, it was during my Amiga days.....
Amiga 1000
Amiga 500
Amiga 2000/2000HD
Amiga 1200
I skipped the Amiga 600 and Amiga 4000
