    fiddled with it very briefly a few years back...i think it involves enabling the WOL feature on your mobo/NIC, and sending a special packet across the network to activate the machine

    It works...

    1st - enabling Wake-On-LAN features on mobo's BIOS or NIC
    2nd - u need another pc to wake up the switched off pc

    Usually, you will need Wake-on-LAN utilities (downloadable anywhere) and it works via MAC/IP address to trigger the command.
