Can I use a car battery for the UPS to increase its running time when in battery mode? Can the UPS be able to charge a higher capacity battery?

Yes a UPS can charge a larger battery. But I suggest using a deep cycle storage battery instead of a car battery for this purpose if possible.

BTW the UPS will take a longer time to charge the bigger battery.

Deep cycle storage battery is the type of lead acid battery for large scale UPS use and even in alternative power systems. I think major battery outlets would have it.

Difference? Regular car battery gets damaged if you drain nearly all the power from it. Deep cycle batteries don't get damaged.

^On malls, not the big ones (>20AH). Deep-cycle batteries are kinda specialized type and are only available from those who sell batteries for golf carts or other equipment such as motorized wheelchairs or mobile x-ray machines where high-capacity is required. In one exhibit, I saw that Motolite produces them. They are usually fully-sealed so that they can be used in any orientation, unlike "sealed" car batteries.

I've tried car batteries for my UPS and they work fine. Try to look for a battery that has a long reserve capacity (RC) It is usually rated in minutes. Having long RC will give you longer minutes to power your UPS. Deep cycle is ok because it ususally has a long RC and it can last so many charge/discharge cycle compared to a regular car battery.
