A Japanese university has started using mobile phones in a new plan to thwart attendance cheats, the Mainichi Shimbun reported Wednesday.
Under the plan, students at Aomori University, upon entering a class, must use a mobile phone to e-mail a number their teacher will show them as the lesson begins. This number connects to a college administrators' site.

Administrators then randomly select five to 10 students who have claimed attendance and send them a reply.
Those receiving the reply must stand up in the classroom and give their name. The random selection aims to prevent students from helping absentee pals skirt the attendance requirement.
"We're probably the first university in the country to introduce a mobile phone-based attendance record system for its students," a university administrator said. "The aim of the system is to reduce the workload of teaching staff, but we hope it also encourages students to study and deepen their knowledge."

ayaw ko nyan! di payag! ehehehe! buti na lang gradweyt na ko!

... yebo is taking the last exam for the semester, professor approaches, looks at name on blue book and asks "mr. y, student ba kita?" without waiting for an answer professor then goes back to his table, checks his records, then goes back to beside yebo's desk. "mr. y, bakit parang ngayon lang kita nakita sa class ko?" to which yours trully answers, with a smile, "e sir di nyo talaga ako makikita sa class nyo, exam lang ako pumapasok e." HAAAAAAH!

ang dami namang kalokohan niyang japanese university na yan. in college, our prof would pass around an attendance sheet, then call on students to answer questions from the sheet. if he calls your name and you're not really there patay ka.

this story reminds me of the joke where NASA found out that pens don't write in space, so they spent a billion dollars to invent a high-tech pen that works even in the harsh vacuum of space. the Russians used a pencil.

i thought it was a joke or an urban legend when i heard it, but i dunno really. i wouldn't put it past NASA to waste money like that ;)
