Tablets, e-book readers close book on ink-and-paper era
GLENN CHAPMAN, AFP December 9, 2011 2:48pm

SAN FRANCISCO - Tablet computers and electronic readers promise to eventually close the book on the ink-and-paper era as they transform the way people browse magazines, check news or lose themselves in novels.

"It is only a matter of time before we stop killing trees and all publications become digital," Creative Strategies president and principal analyst Tim Bajarin told AFP.

Online retail giant Amazon made electronic readers mainstream with Kindle devices and Apple ignited insatiable demand for tablets ideal for devouring online content ranging from films to magazines and books....

I seriously doubt it. Have you seriously tried typing a lengthy business letter or an article to be published on a tablet? Although tablets will have a niche, notebook PCs will still be the future of mobile computing (and even home computing as well with more people using notebooks to replace desktop PCs).

E-readers are fantastically convenient devices - I carry hundreds of books in mine. While a lot of people while say that tablets can serve the same function, and offer more besides, the sunlight legibility and battery life (measured in weeks, not hours) offered by my Sony e-reader are capabilities not matched by any tablet. If you're not reading picture-heavy or layout dependent books, e-readers make so much more sense than a normal book.

I also carry lots of magazines in my ultrabook (and formerly, in my netbooks).

Although limited to hours of battery life, a lightweight notebook PC is still a great way to have mobile computing flexibility.

Well, I do tend to read a lot - one book a week (used to be every two to three days, but I've got two kids and a longer commute now ). I also tend to re-read books, sometimes multiple times, and I don't mind long series, so whenever a new one comes out, I usually read every book from the start, so that characters and storylines are fresh in my mind when I get to the new release.

I don't know sir GH, notebooks/laptops has been there for quite sometime now. Maybe they could come-up with a new design or technology on the "functionality" of tablets that could addressed one of the primary concern of tablet pc which is typing.

A laptop can't beat a desktop in terms of versatility, a laptop can't beat a tablet in terms of mobility. Streaming and now the cloud makes the tablet more desirable...

Downside, it's about the same price as a full blown notebook PC. Yet the specs are not even par with a notebook PC (processor speed, memory, storage, ports).

correct sir GH, that is the limitation right now of a tablet pc. I hope there's a thread on different tablet pc comparison.

SAbi ni misis may nag pa bid na school last year ng sangkaterbang tablets for their students sa company nila. Parang ito na nga ang direksiyon.

Some schools are using tablets as gimmick to attract more students to enroll.

Only time will tell if the move to tablets instead of books would be better or as a gimmick.

It's a cost savings for the school and the students in the long run. Why print out millions upon millions of identical throwaway textbooks that students will have to lug around everywhere they go when you can just use tablets?

Considering this for our High School. We're already planning to use this for some of our remote programs.

Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
