My Palm T|X for instance, is more than a decade old and it’s still working. The battry retention is probably down to 25% from when it was new but it doesn’t matter since the product is obsolete. I’m just keeping it for nostalgia and novelty.

My Phantom 3 drone smart batteries are set to auto-discharge to around 60% when not used for more than 2 days. I’ve set it as such because I don’t get to use it much. Every few months, I charge it up to full, do some flights, charge it again to full, store it and let the auto-discharge kick in.
    OT.
i also have my Palm still.
    i tried giving it away.
no dice. no one wanted it.

    Heat.

When a lithium ion battery is at very low voltage, it draws a lot of current. Drawing lots of current produces heat.

Charging it past full also generates heat since the energy that can no longer be absorbed by the cells turns to heat.

Charging circuits built into all phones prevent this. They stop charging when the battery becomes full. Not to mention the protection circuit that is built-into the cell itself.

You can verify this using a USB ammeter to see the current drop to near-zero (phone powered-on) or zero (phone off) when the batteries become full.

It’s no different from a laptop. You can indefinitely leave it plugged in even after the battery has been fully charged.

the lithium battery bursts into flame, not because it is being used or being charged, but because it is defective.
in daily ordinary use, most of us have no battery issues.

    the pot-watcher!
besides, if i don't charge to 100%, the bars go down significantly faster, sometimes hovering over the danger zone in the most mis-opportune of times.

Me! Well technically my phone itself limits the battery charge to 80-90% gamit yung built-in charging optimisation feature.

Ilang years ko na din ako nag oovernight charging though most of the time iniiwasan ko talaga. Pag chineck ko naman yung battery health, lahat sila still in great condition with minimal battery wear.

Overnight charging is a non-issue for any modern mobile phone or most LiIon-equipped gadgets of reasonable reputation.

There are exceptions though. I have a pair of Cobra 2-way radios that still use a manual charger. From empty, you need to set a reminder to stop the charger after 8-10 hours. Even though I've forgotten to remove the radios from the charging dock several times, sometimes for more than 48 hrs (batteries were a little warm to the touch), the radios still work. The batteries already have a very slight bloat on them but there doesn't seem to be any significant decrease in capacity, considering they're already 8 years old.

cellphones are disposable used it max for 1.5 at most to 2 years.

Don't fret about battery life or charging. Personally I charge whenever there's a chance and I also leave it plug overnight all the time. Wala naman problema

Life is complicated as it is. Huwag ninyo na dagdagan ng iisipin pa.

    Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact anyone?

Shame SonyPH decided not to release it here officially. I am currently using an iPhone SE cause I just have preference for smaller phones that I can easily use one hand. Smaller phones also have better battery life due to their lower resolution screens.

Any rumors regarding a follow up to the iPhone SE. I still prefer to stay in the Apple camp given their more consistency in updates and proven track record. Otherwise, thinking of getting the XZ1 Compact cause its pretty much the only Android phone sub 5 inches that has top of the line hardware; but the current SE is still ok. The looks of the SE is looking very old and the camera could be better especially the crappy selfie camera. thats why I am thinking of upgrading...

We got 2 pcs Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. The touchscreen LCDs became unresponsive after one year and warranty over. We switched to different brand already.

Waley. Your only choice is to get one from grey market sellers.

Why not make life simpler with easy to repair phones?

Sabagay, mga used iPhones from other countries satin naman binebenta. Used network-locked iPhone 6 for 8K, anyone?

Still smartphones sir, usually when new phones come out lumalabas din repairability scores. Notorious yung glass phones with curved edges, not to mention yung overpriced iPhone 8 repair charges.

Yung Xperia, relatively easy to repair kasi maganda yung internal construction, pati yung older iPhone models were also easier to repair kaso biglang naglabas yung Apple ng update na hindi mo magagamit yung Touch ID or the LCD itself because of unauthorized replacements.

And if you do get your battery worn out early, bubuksan pa lang yung glass panel pahirapan na.

Because if they sell you a phone that you can easily repair or upgrade, you won't buy a new phone...which means lower sales for them...which means their poor CEO can no longer afford that private island he's been eyeing since yesterday

Seriously though, components have been shrinking in size...it has advantages in terms of the amount of materials being used, power consumption, overall size of the gadget. As a consequence they are not as repairable as your dad's dumb phone(you're more likely to burn off that capacitor the moment you make contact with a hot soldering iron)

Except the Apple fingerprint scanner security issue, component repair is the easy part. But that won't matter if the phone case is welded shut and would shatter and self-destruct at any attempt to crack it open. I think this is THE no. 1 nuisance when having any gadget repaired. Replacing, say, a worn out USB port is easy and cheap. But if it means breaking the display, touchscreen, or the glass back to get to it, it becomes economically unrepairable.
