i would like to know more about this..

a) How does this work?
b) Does the device use a 3G signal? What if the location does not have a 3G signal?
c) Does this work with Windows Vista?

i'm planning to get one to expand my mobility. Pero i have to have some clear answers on the questions above.

Hi got this info from a friend:

a) It's a modem that can be installed in the PC via USB. The modem also contains the PC client software.

b) The device uses HSDPA and 3G signal. It will automatically switch to EDGE or GPRS if the location has no 3G signal.

c) Yes, it works with Vista but there are some versions of Vista that still has bugs and needs to be updated.

That was in their SmartBro website. I read that also a week ago. But checking it again, edited na yung page. Wala na yung Plann 999 na unlimited access. And even the Plan 799 had been changed as well from the initial press release of 60 hours free down to 40 hours na lang.

currently i'm using PLDT 3G WeRoam -- USB type. This looks like the same as Smart Bro's Wireless Modem.

noting the difference are:

> speed of my 3G Weroam is 1.3 Mbps max (HSDPA) or 480 kbps (UMTS) ... while Smart Bro's WM is 384 to 768 kbps. (pero parehas naman 3G?)

but in the website & TV commercial, monthly fee of Smart Bro WM is only P799... but the PLDT 3G Weroam is P1,900!!!

is this the smart version of globes visibility? parang nakita ko nga to sa TV. this will be good for those road warriors na hindi laging babad sa internet. ahehehe! as for me. sa globe unlimited access pa rin ako (well atleast for another year.. ahehehe!)

this is different from globe visibility. for one, g-visibility uses a PCMCIA card and there is a SIM card that is used within the PCMCIA card na nag-da-dial palabas. this one is a USB modem.

i still doubt the speed that this unit will give. sana mayroon silang free trial muna.

if you have 3G-capable phone, you can use it as a wireless modem capable of smartbro speeds.

for example LG KU250 can be used as a modem. Smart charge is P10/30 mins which i think is very reasonable.

yes, i have tried this before. using my 6680 and my n80.
but i gave up my n80 na in favor of a blackberry unit, because i need the push email functionalities.

and besides, mahina signal ng 3G sa bahay eh. so parating gprs lang. most of the time nasa 128 kbps lang ako.

And pag di mo pala na-consume yung full 30min in one connection, charged ka pa rin ng full 30min (P10.00), i.e., if naka 10 min. ka lang, P10.00 ang charge sayo. If naka 35 min ka, P20.00 naman ang kaltas sa load mo.

Yup, charging is P10 per 30 minutes. Regardless of how many times you connect/disconnect within 30 minutes, you will still be charged P10.

Mas gusto ko na ito kaysa sa P5 for every 15 minutes kuno ng Globe. When I read the fine print in Globe's site, you get charged P5 every session pala. Pag na disconnect ka accidentally then nag re-connect, you get charged another P5.

One advantage of Bro's modem is it has HSDPA which can give faster speeds than 3G. Almost all major cities has HSDPA, plus you don't have to worry about being disconnected when there are incoming calls which I regularly experienced with my N73.

at least globe offers the same rate and di na yung per kilobyt charge

im using my e51 as a modem kaso bihira lang aku makahanap ng 3.5 (hsdpa) signal

SmartBro uses a 3.5G HSDPA Data Phone. It's like a regular GSM handset but is dedicated in making Data calls, not voice. Inside the unit is a regular Smart SIM card. I used to work for the company that supplies those to Smart and the PLDT Landline Plus units.

Alternatively, you may use any 3G or 3.5G handset with a Smart SIM (regardless if pre or post paid) and connect it to your computer and you get charged the same rate as SmartBro prepaid charges.

Note that this system is entirely different from the original offering of SmartBro where they install an outside antenna and a modem to your PC, which I think uses WiMax (not sure though).
