Found this helpful review. The site also discussed the advantages of having a separate modem for internet connection.

tama si themann DON'T buy it! para naman sila nakakaloko niyan. bumili ka na lang ng 3g capable phone na may built-in modem. its just the same, may phone ka pa. you'll get the same speeds.

The modem can connect to HSDPA which can give speeds of up to 1MB. THe cheapest HSDPA phone is still in the range of 16k-20k. 3G phones can only give you up to 3b4 kbps.
Plus, you don't have to worry about getting disconnected from the internet when a call or sms comes in.

advantages of using the USB modem,:
1. dedicated connection for internet
2. plug it anywhere, software installer is already in the modem,
3. easy to load, halos lahat ng tindahan may pasaload
4. HSDPA capable, up to 3.6Mbps pero i still doubt if the smart can provide this service
disadvantages of using a 3G capable modem
1. can't use longer at the talk time, you have to charge it
2. some users say they encounter load problems ( not enough load)
3. need required software to use phone as modem.
4. limited to 384 kbps
