Power Outage Hits Metro Manila as Electricity Demand Peaks
A power outage hit areas of Metro Manila on Wednesday after the National Power Corp. (Napocor) failed to meet strong demand for electricity which began to peak on Tuesday, officials said.
Energy consumption peaked at 6630 megawatts (mw) on Tuesday, more than Napocor's estimated demand of 6400 mw, amid the summer season with consumers using electric fans and air conditioners for a longer period of time.
Meralco, the country's biggest power distributor, early on Wednesday implemented a manual load dropping schedule, which resulted in rotating power interruptions which hit portions of Malabon, Novaliches, Sta. Cruz, Sta. Ana, and Sta, Mesa in Metro Manila. Outside the capital, portions of Sta.Maria, Balagtas, Baliwag and Angat in Bulacan were also hit by power interruption from 10:19 am to 12:30 pm.
In a statement, Meralco said the manual load dropping schedule temporarily ended at 12:30 pm. The power distributor said this was due tot he cutting-in of Sta. Rita Module 10 and the diversion of coal intended for Cebu to the Pagbilao plant.
Meralco spokesman Elpi Cuna, however, warned that the system was still on red alert due to power reserve problems.

Actually natawa ako nung napanood ko ito sa news. Akala ko naman na-doble yung load or something. Na-overload lang pala ng 3.6% hahaha. i mean it's understandable na nag-overload sya kung 30% or somethin, but a mere 3.6% just shows how much they're stretching it.

There is no "standby" powerplants that lies idle here in the Philippines (well, except for one in Bataan).
There are just some plants that don't produce at optimal levels in anticipation of peak consumption.
As NAPOCOR said, even they didn't anticipate that electricity consumption will breach their projected peak consumption. Expect them to divert electricity from other plants in the coming days to curb this shortage.
Buhay na buhay ang BGC this evening. Bukas halos lahat ng restaurants. Sabi pa nung isang cashier...
