suggestions naman. we've accumulated quite a number of them here in the office, pero di namin madispose 'coz they do contain sensitive company data.

short of melting the darn things down, is there a way to really really make sure that the data is erased? would running them through a very strong magnet work?

you can use debug. just boot up to a command prompt with a disc containing debug.

*** This will destroy all data on the hard drive! No kidding! **

bro... if they contained sensitive data before... it is best if you still store them.

no matter how you electronically "format" the hard drive, data can still be recovered in one way or the other (it jus depends on the patience of the one doing it - hehe).

physically destroying the drives is the only way to do it.

I wonder how effective would a powerful rare earth magnet fare against hard drives?

hmmm...dunno, me chance pa rin atang mababasa ung drives kahit binabad sa tubig. over time masisira ung mylar/media, pero theoretically, pwede ata siyang itanggal at itransplant sa ibang hard drive?

hmmm...i guess burning them would work...i mean, di naman kelangang maging abo, basta'at mag melt/warp lang ung media sa loob. messy though.

i still think that a low level EMP should be able wipe the disk clean B)

Yes, funny as it may sound, the best solution is to physically destroy the drive. Whack them.

But if these are Seagate Cheetah SCSI 10,000rpm drives or faster, 68-pin, 73GB and above, just give them to me please. I'll destroy them via ultramagnetic and G force. I'll just do something with the drive. I won't be using it but i'll be able to trade it in for some discount when i buy SCSI drives. hehe.

Im planning to dedicate my 720GB SATA-3G drives as data drive then put OS in SCSI drives but i only have 37GB 10k rpm 68-pin drive (+controller of course). An additional one would be for Linux.

So if you have a SCSI 68pin Seagate Cheetah (usually ending model is LW) lying unused somewhere please donate it me to put it to good use. thanks! hehehe :D

yup... whacking the discs and then scattering the debris is the best solution.
