Cost of digital TV to decide RP adoption

RP has yet to decide on standard

MANILA, Philippines--Despite supporting the future rollout of digital broadcast in the country in the next five to seven years, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has yet to decide which standard it would support.

NTC Commissioner Ruel Canobas said one of the major factors for deciding which standard to adopt is the price of the digital set top boxes. These are devices that receive digital signals and converts images for digital TV.

Currently, two digital TV standards are being looked at for adoption in the Philippines: the Japanese ISDB-T (integrated services digital broadcasting-terrestrial) and the competing European standard DVB-T (digital video broadcasting-terrestrial).

Both standards allow for high definition video delivered in widescreen format. They also allow for various interactive services including on-demand video services.

During a demonstration of the DVB standard by the European Commission, Canobas said there were many considerations before choosing the digital TV standard for the country.

“We have to carefully assess the adoption because once we’ve chosen a standard then that’s what we’ll be using. We’re talking about total migration from analog to digital. A lot of administrative work has to be done specially on frequency allocation plan,” Canobas said.

Quoting the Japanese government, Canobas said the prices of set top boxes is currently around $29 (P1,377) while the European Union puts the price of the DVB set top box at $26 (P1,235).

The NTC has announced that it would no longer accept applications for analog signals by December 2015.

The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) has urged the NTC to prioritize the drafting of the implementing rules and regulation for the transition from analog to digital.

The group said that the NTC should look at both the technical and business aspect of digital TV.

If they choose the Japanese standard, it would be because of the JPEPA clout.

Obviously, we only use either European or US standards here so it would be a bad idea to adopt Japanese standard as it would greatly limit the potential of what we can do with the technology itself.

The big question is, who will pay for the set top box?

Will the Phil gov give it out for free or let the people buy their own?

This June 12, the US will be fully digital. It was maybe about a year ago when the Fed released $40 coupons (max of $80) per household to buy their converter boxes (for old tv sets). As reference: https://www.dtv2009.gov/

IMHO, the RP gov is waiting till 2015 since majority have already transitioned to a new tv set by then and the need for a set top box is unnecessary? Sana gayahin na lang yung US model para lahat happy!

Ako mas preferred ko ang ISDB-T of Japan kaysa sa DVB-T ng Europe. Primarily for the 1seg feature. At least in the near future, we can have TV programs in our cellphones.

And mas maganda ang reception and error correction niya and 0% Electromagnetic interference (impulse noise) kaysa sa DVB-T. I think most skycable users here experience E48 or something like this (see image) when using their DVB-C Digibox.

sana tuloy tuloy na ang migration natin to DTV :D

Yes. All you need to have is an ISDB-T set top box (STB). This serves as a TV tuner which receives ISDB-T signals and all you have to do is connect it to your TV set. It has video output terminals which you can connect to your HD TV or even to an ordinary TV. The video connection can be via RCA cables (component or composite video), S-Video for higher quality video or connections can be via HDMI cable for HD quality videos. Standard ISDB-T set top boxes have these types of video terminals (component/ composite, S-Video and HDMI). Audio terminals are in stereo. It could cost around $11 or even lower. The Japanese government have a commitment with the Philippine government to put up an ISDB-T set top box factory in the country. This could even lower the price of the STBs.

Diba pag sinabing digital hindi automatic na ibig sabihin ay high definition? The picture can still be standard definition iyon nga lang hindi mo na makukuha iyong content (picture) through the air antenna?

mukhang walang subsidy from the government. medyo bwisit nga yun cable provider ko. before walang tuner box tapos nagkaroon na ng tuner box and they said na digital na daw kasi yun signal nila pero walang binayaran, now nung nagloloko yun remote nung box sabi nila walang replacement then pinipilit nila yun "HD" box nila and I have to shell out 2k for that. Ang nakakainis nga eh yun mga mag-aapply pa lang sa kanila ngayon eh same price lang din ang babayaran for connection fee and box tapos ako 2 years na subscriber and i still need to shell out the same amount!

Digital TV is a mode of transmission and reception, if the signal contains digital signal, your reception will depend on the content format of the signal (HD or SD), the receiver (TV) and the Set Top Box that you are using. If you are using your old tv, then you need a set top box and even if the signal contains HD, because your tv is SD then you can only expect a maximum of SD quality.

as for the signal, you can use a conventional antenna, do not be deceived by some marketing ploy that "the antenna is Digital",..there is no such thing!. the antenna receives RF,..that's it.

    hope this helps.

ABS-CBN allots P1B for shift to digital TV

MANILA, Philippines - ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. will spend an initial P1 billion in its bid to become the first company to offer digital television (DTV) in the country.

Company officials said as soon as the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) releases the rules that will govern DTV transmission, hopefully by June this year, ABS-CBN will be ready to offer this new technology. Government also has yet to decide between adopting the Japanese and European standard for DTV broadcast.

Since the NTC has yet to decide on the deadline for the total migration from analog to digital transmission to either 2015 or 2020, ABS-CBN will be offering both analog and digital in the interim.

But as soon as the deadline arrives, analog transmission will have to be totally shut down so that free-to-air channels can only be viewed either by using a box that would allow their TV sets to receive digital signal or subscribing to a cable TV service.

ABS-CBN owns SkyCable, the country’s largest cable TV service provider.

ABS-CBN DTV marketing head Miguel Mercado said they are ready to launch their operations within the year and are just awaiting the final go-signal from NTC.

The broadcasting company will be offering a digital box mainly to non-cable TV subscribers for the price of a DVD player (between P1,000 to P3,000) without any monthly subscription fee.

Mercado said through this box, which can be attached to any kind of TV, viewers can enjoy five new channels for free in addition to receiving all free-to-air channels that will be broadcasting digitally. The new channels include two for kids, one for the youth, one for dads, and another for moms.

He revealed that this would include ABS-CBN’s Channel 2 and Studio 23, GEM, and NBN. These channels are currently doing test broadcasting in digital.

As for ABS-CBN, he said plans are to make DTV ready for Visayas and Mindanao in the next few years.

However, both GMA Network and TV5 have said that they are ready to shift to digital.

“With Philippine broadcasting companies going digital, the viewing public will be able to enjoy digital quality viewing in any TV as DTV addresses the issues of poor reception, grainy pictures and choppy audio,” Mercado explained.

The directive for the Philippines to go digital, he said, is up to par with the international standard as more and more countries are switching off their analog signals.

Some of the countries that have adopted DTV include the US, China, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and Denmark.

I'm subscribed to the cable service of Destiny. Possible ba na when the Digital mandate is in effect eh ang ipapalabas nilang signal sa kanilang RCA cable ay direct digital without the need of a TV box?
