World War II had everything a video game developer could ever want -- an evil dictator intent on conquering the world, global politics, multiple battlegrounds and heroic legends. However, the problem is delivering a tight game that also gives players the full scope of the difficulty the Allied Powers faced as they tried to coordinate three armies sprawled across Europe.

Activision's Call of Duty gives gamers a first-hand look at the chaos that was World War II. Players will be in charge of three different squads -- American, British and Russian -- as they progress through the final months of war, driving the Germans back to the Fatherland. There are 24 missions in all, divided into four sections.

The game begins with the legendary 101st Airborne Division as they leap behind enemy lines in preparation for D-Day. Once the attack commences, players take over the British Special Forces' 6th Airborne Troop during the Pegasus Bridge attack. Finally, you join the Russians in the deadly battle for Stalingrad. With the Germans now on the run across three fronts, the game ends with a siege on Berlin as players coordinate their squads in an effort to pin down the Third Reich.

The game, though, faces stiff competition from the Medal of Honor franchise, which has nearly set the standard for the WWII genre. Still, Call of Duty should satisfy the twitch-happy, itchy trigger finger player because the first-person shooter was built with id Software's Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Quake III engine. The combat is sprawled across the European theater and encompasses a variety of game play. Players must become proficient in battlefield combat as well as heart-pounding sniper fights where the enemy remains largely hidden from sight.

The shooter requires more than just a penchant for fragging. Players will need to rely upon the AI-controlled squads which provide important support such as laying down cover fire, rescuing wounded soldiers, and coordinating attacks on enemy positions that would be impossible to take with frontal assaults. This becomes increasingly critical as the game moves from the open battlegrounds into urban combat, where the Germans will hide, ambush, and reinforce their ranks across the ever-widening field of battle.

As the game moves from the American and British occupied Eastern front, to the Russian controlled Western front, the mission objectives will become increasingly tricky, according to Activision. Although the company has been tight-lipped about specifics, they have promised Call of Duty will involve more than just driving the Axis armies into Germany. There will also be some form of multiplayer, as well, although the specifics haven't been released yet.

Call of Duty, which is still unrated, will be released for the PC in the fall of 2003. For those who can't get enough of the game, Activision is also working on a companion series, Call of Duty: Finest Hour, which will be released for home consoles sometime in 2004.
