Newbie at Using Wifi Routers Please Help

I am a newbie in matters of using a router. Before I will purchase a router, can anyone here suggest a Wireless Router with a simple configuration procedure...I am here in Cebu and saw several wifi "n" routers brands (buffalo, tp link, d link, lyksys, etc...). Since my budget is only around 3-3.5k and I want a wifi "n", I saw a Buffalo Brand- Nfiniti™ Wireless-N Router & Access Point WHR-G300N, but some reviews say it's not good.

Another is D-Link Wireless N Router DIR-615...costs about 3.5k. Does this have a simple configuration/installation procedure? My set up by the way is a PLDT Zyxel P-600 series (small black box), a PC, and a netbook....

I want a wifi n rather than a wifi g for future upgrades....

Yes.... tama yun huwag na huwag ang Buffalo kz yung akin good for 1 week lng at nasira agad... buti na lang pumasok pa sa 1 week replacement kaya pinalitan ko ng Linksys n 615... ok yon at di mahirap ang configuration... pasok mo agad ang CD tapos sundin mo ang step by step na kung ano at kung saan mo i-connect ang mga cord.. ayun in 10 mins time tapos ang configuration. Yung modem... wala yon configured na yon bago mo kunin o deliver sa bahay mo ng pldt o globe.

If you're a newbie don't go for the expensive brands because they can have quite a difficult GUI(Graphic user interface) basically saying yung MENU niya mahirap i setup.

I'd recommend you just getting an ENCORE wi-fi router from CD-R King store. I've been using mine for over a year now and it's working fine. Just purchase bigger antennas like a 9Dbi antenna which CD-R King also has. Madali lang ang menu niya and they have a download pdf file(adobe acrobat file) with pictures and instructions on it. My sister who never used a router, much more a wi-fi router before but managed to setup all her laptops and desktops within less than 15 mins. Very affordable rin naman yung Encore.

if you're after something cheap yet good, TPlink is ok. been using one the past year and it's been perfect. on the other hand, i'm also partial to linksys since i've had one that's been up and running for close to 3 years now.

*rensom, sorry to hear about your Buffalo router. Baka tyempo lang naman, pinalitan naman eh. Ako kasi very satisfied ako sa Buffalo kasi mura (P1500 lang ang wifi-G sa Octagon), tapos it supports DD-WRT. So I have 2 Buffalos, both with DD-WRT. I use one as an access point, and one as a wireless client bridge. My main router is an ASUS.

I heard good things about Edimax rin. Cheap and reliable daw.

I find the Buffalo to be quite okay. Bought the exact same model (WHR-G300N), because it was the cheapest N-spec router out there.

I had a little difficulty installing it at first, because I didn't read the manual. Naka-on yung DIAG (red) light, dapat pala it will go off after a few seconds. Eh nag-hang na pala, but all throughout I was tinkering with the settings wondering why I couldn't connect my brother's laptop to the Internet. Pero nung binasa ko na yung manual, in less than 5 minutes, na-install ko na, and that was my first time installing one.

I was actually choosing between Asus & Netgear, pero G-spec lang sila eh. Yung laptop kasi ng utol ko, Wireless-N na, kaya I chose the cheapest N-spec router in the market.

My only regret is bumabagal pala yung connection ko by about 50% pag may gumamit ng laptop (desktop ko kasi sa bahay walang wireless N adapter). Hindi pa ko marunong mag-configure on how to balance the load para hindi masyado bumagal yung desktop pag may gumagamit ng laptop.

OO nga eh...buti umabot pa. Dito pa nga ako humingi ng tulong sa configuration...papaano ba naman ang ginamit ko eh yung 1 meter standard ethernet cable at di yung manipis na 1 foot na kasama sa package kya walang response pag nilagay mo yung IP address sa browser. Sa una ok yun mabilis nga at satisfy na ako kya nga ng binalik ko balak ko kunin same model pero nabulungan ako ng salesman na 2 na raw ako na nag return at same problem... naka-connect pero walang data na pumapasok need pa i-reset...baka daw sa batch.. as i remember manufactured date nya sa sticker sa back panel is may 09.

Yeah, they have a wifi-N router. I'm using 5 of them right now for my homes. Go for the the model EHNWI-N with the 3 antennas. May YM tech support pa sila at phone support.

Mga Bossing, thanks for all your inputs. Just bought an Asus EZ Wireless N Router RT-N11. I practically just plugged the devise and viola, connected na ang desktop PC ko and my laptop. Kahit inside ako sa room ko with my laptop closed ang door, ang signal is outstanding...I think I would recommend this to all newbie to wifi routers...Its a wifi "n" so ang lakas ng signal. I do believe I will have to configure later para sa password...so thanks guys....BTW, it only costs three thousand two hundred pesos so, not bad for a wifi n...linksys costs 4.6k for a wifi n; a d link costs 3.5k...

sir encore din ang brand ng wifi namin kaso hindi namin alam kung pano mglagay ng password dun.paano po kaya sir help naman?tiningnan nanamin dun sa cd wla kming mahanap.pero nung set up nmin sya madali lang plug and play lang wala na kaming configure.ang problem lang namin maglagay ng password.

Encore has the the 802.11N protocol, twice the price of their G.

No, speed din. N can go up to 300+mbps (tested with Dell xps m1530, Mac Pro, macbook pro and iMac).

Personally, I use Edimax (because of the 2-year warranty). I usually don't buy unknown brands because usually, you get what you pay for.

I'll be upgrading my router soon (routine upgrade) so I'm looking at Belkin N+ (lifetime warranty). I bought two for the client's offices for only 8k each. Flawless.

Galactus, turn on QOS, where you can either:

1.) Set a reserve bandwidth for your computer and let the router auto-balance the remaining for others.

2.) Set the router to auto-balance everything for everyone.
