June 1st, 2009 09:12 AM #1Planning to buy a netbook. Which is the better deal?
MSI Wind U100 Plus LXP8. Have not canvassed yet, but per Villman website P22,992. Should be cheaper if cash price.
Intel atom N280 1.66
2 GB DDR2 ram
250 GB HDD
10 inch LED screen 1024x600
4 in one card reader
10/100 lan and wifi g
6 cell battery
1 kg
Asus 1000HE. P19,300 cash price
Intel atom N280 1.66
1 GB DDR2 ram
160 GB HDD + 10 gb online storage.
10 inch screen 1024x600
MMC SD card reader
wifi N
6 cell battery claims up to 9 hours battery life.
1.45 kg
Does this have 10/100 LAN?
Battery not a big deal. I'm plugged in most of the time. Need LAN, my office still uses wired network. Weight is important. Hate carrying my current 15.4 inch laptop.

For me..those netbooks is all about mobility. Therefore..weight and battery life are the most important parameters.
If you are 'plugged' and 'wired' most of the time, then I suggest better get those thin and light notebooks. there are 12.1" and 13.3" versions which are full spec'd.
Netbooks are good enough for chatting and browsing..but may be too limited for officework.
But if you really have to choose between the two..my vote goes for the Wind.

MSi Wind U100+ can be bought from PC Corner for only P21,000 cash if you have a Tipid PC forum account.
The Asus 1000HE has both bluetooth and Wifi N while Wind U100+ has a larger conventional HDD and.
Which is the better deal? Depends on what your primary needs are, connectivity to devices or more on-board storage. Also do you plan to do mods on the unit or use it as is?
For me, I would choose the 1000HE assuming I would feel comfy typing with it's keyboard and trackpad (that is coming from a Wind U100+ owner). I haven't had extensive time using the 1000HE so I can't definitely say which one. One thing I would definitely do is upgrade the memory to 2gb to maximize whatever performance I could get.
Currently I have a U100+ and it serves my needs well enough. It's original six cell battery is good for 4.5 hours of typical use which is NOT enough for me so I bought a nine cell battery pack which increased the time to around 7 hours. Aside from the usual internet surfing use, I also use my netbook to watch movies and tv shows while on out of town trips so I want a big HDD over connectivity options (Wifi N and BT).
But if I need BT, I already have a micro-USB BT device so its not that I don't have BT when I need it, its just less convenient to use it.

June 1st, 2009 09:10 PM #6Just checked out the lenovo S12 on the net. Looks like I'll wait for this one. 12 inch netbook with full size keyboard weighing about the same as the Asus, nice.
