You need to install COREAVC. I assume you already have your preferred video player installed... I use MediaPlayer Classic and this works on an Acer Aspire One (9in LCD with SSD model) and on my Intel Atom based with Intel945 graphics chipset file server at home. This also worked on my U210x in "OFFICE" eco setting, where previously playing 720i videos in this mode resulted in laggy playback.

Go to the website link below and download the "installer"...

    http://downloads.phpnuke.org/en/down...-n/COREAVC.htm

Run the installer but unclick all the toolbar and homepage options (unless you want the toolbar and a new homepage)

The installer will download the actual COREAVC installer file.

    Run the COREAVC installer.

At this point, you can already play 720p videos. But I add an additional step by going to the EXTERNAL FILTERS option of MPC and adding COREAVC into it's filters list.

As for 1080 videos... sorry, software can only get your hardware going so much...

BTW, this will also work on other computers aside from netbooks.

Installed the COREAVC. Played 720p mkv file. Under WinXp, it played with very minimal slow down, with either MPC or VLC. But under Win7 ultimate, 720p is noticeably slower, skipping frames, and basically unwatchable. In MPC (even using COREAVC in external filter), picture doesn't skip frames that much but audio is noticeably out of synch.

GeCube Ati Radeon 9550 128 MB

    Do I need an upgrade?

For those experiencing slow down or video/audio sync problems, try openning the OPTIONS for COREAVC and check the option for FORCE VMR AR correction (located at right column).

You can also try the other options and see what works for you.

I have downloaded and watched 720p videos many times (by unknowingly choosing 1.09GB TV show *******s over their 350MB counterparts :twak using stock VLC on my Thinkpad X61 (Intel GMA 965-based video) -- they all played just fine. Didn't need to install COREAVC.

I've already watched Transformers (2007) and directed it to my Full HD TV using only a 1.5m VGA cable. Much nicer! Perhaps VLC has improved much?

I have yet to acquire a 1080p video. Don't have the disk space. :sigh:

I remember now: .Avi 720p playback is smooth even on Maximum Battery Life profile, but .Mkv 720p requires my x61 to run on High Performance profile. I wonder if COREAVC will give a profound improvement in this regard.

In my case, COREAVC let my netbook play 720/MKV video files even in battery saving modes.

I've got screen tearing problems when viewing 720p videos on VLC.

    something like this:

(the top of Rock's head looks chopped off)

I've change VLC's video output settings to Direct X video output and it helped a bit. but the problem still persists sometimes. The problem also occurs when I output the video via hdmi on my HDTV.

I gonna give COREAVC a try, I hope this solves the problem.

    On what computer? (specs)

I mentioned that the codec will help mainly those with NETBOOKS, especially those with the Intel 945/950 graphic chips to achieve 720p video capacity.

So far... it's merely one set of MKVs I'm having a problem with... my copy of Blood the Last Vampire, which used to run like crap on my Netbook now runs ultra-smooth... thanks, GH! Going to be trying other problematic MKVs, like the Macross Frontier set, next.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Do you want 720p video playback for your netbook?
