This refers to the backlighting used by LCD TVs.

At present there are two main methods of backlighting in LCD flat-panels: Cold-Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) and LED (light-emitting diode).
All locally available LED backlit LCD TVs use edge lit. Unless you're buying a direct LED back lit, you're paying extra money only for the ***iness.

Maikwento ko lang: pinagpilian ko na sila...

manipis ang LED LCD, pero sa gilid lang yun, saan ba tayo manonood? sa harap di naman sa gilid....

ganun din naman, kaya LCD binili ko....:toast:

The good thing about LED backlit is that it instantly achieves full brightness (white) in just a matter of seconds. CCFL needs about 30mins, AFAIK.

yun nga. LED TV sila ng LED TV. LCD parin naman yun na LED lang ang backlight instead of the conventional ccfl.

Plasma picture is pretty good, with contrast ratio comparable to the newer LEDs, but even with newer plasmas, I'm concerned about burn-in. I've seen some showroom units with pretty nasty burn-in. 100k hours sounds pretty impressive, but the question is what the picture quality will be like in the last 40k of those 100k hours.

LED is really the way to go. Low heat. Low power consumption. Great contrast ratio. And non-3D 42 inchers from Samsung and LG are now in the 35k region. We are finally upgrading my Mom's six year old HD LCD with a new one this week.

3D screens are drool worthy, but we're waiting for the tech to sort itself out before taking the plunge. It'd be a shame to buy now only to find inexpensive glasses-free 3D TVs on the market next Christmas.

On the truly high-end of the spectrum, plasmas still produce the best picture quality, bar-none. Burn-ins are not as big a problem as 5 years ago, and even then, this was more of a problem for gamers and those used for marketing signage. The newer plasmas in the market hardly have burn-in problems.

Contrast ratios, when talking about numbers, between LED's and Plasmas is apples to oranges. An LED which claims a 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio will still not beat even a mid-end plasma model in terms of deeper blacks (essential for movies) which only has a listed 2,000,000:1 ratio. This is because LCD's and, by extension, its LED cousins, measure it as Dynamic Contrast ratio, where the backlight of the panel is dimmed (by software) to get the darkest image possible (plasmas measure it as static contrast ratio). This can be problematic when an image on the screen has both very dark and very bright objects, the LCD/LED software will not be able to adjust the screen enough to get the similar picture quality of a plasma (or a very high-end HD CRT, for that matter).

The TV's with the best picture quality in the world, for movies and 3D, are still plasmas (OLED can potentially take the throne but the technology is still not practical enough for living rooms).

When it comes to heat and power consumption, LED wins. Take note, that comparable panel sizes between LED's and plasmas of the same model year typically have a difference of, at most, 20%, which can equate to very little savings on your Meralco bill.

*Verbal Kint: The problem is... I am a gamer... so burn-in is an issue, for sure. Though I am aware that newer ones have less of an issue.

Still... even though I am impressed with the picture quality of plasma, I'm going the LED route, simply because the new screens come closer than the older ones to the black depths of plasma. Yeah... the savings might not be that great, but I feel that the low heat and consumption will probably do well for overall longevity.

*glenn: Still not going 3D. It's nice and all, but it's still more of a novelty. What I'm waiting to see is which technology matures fastest and best... the active glasses, the passive glasses or glasses-free. I'm aware glasses-free is a long ways away, but by the time it matures, then we'll have enough content to make it worthwhile.

At the moment, the compromises of 3D, the need for glasses, the eyestrain on long viewing, limited viewing angles and limited content (I hate the 3D effects that are being retroactively put onto older movies... looks artificial and cheap, 3D games, on the other hand... take a hit on frame-rates and detail compared to their non-3D modes) means that I won't be missing it much for the meantime.

Atsaka low-budget ako. 42" will do for now.

The cutting edge right now would be large OLED screens with 4k resolution. Masyado lang mahal. They were unveiled at CES a few weeks ago.

    Slightly OT:

I primarily play HD movies off of my server. Can a Smart LED TV be a substitute for media streamers such as WD TV Live, Xtreamer, Popcorn Hour, Roku, etc.? More importantly, can it play a plethora of movie file formats from a networked PC without a hitch?

    The models I'm considering are:

    Smart LED TV:
LG SMART LED 42” 42LS5700 or
    LG SMART LED 42” 42LV3700

    Conventional LED TV:
    LG LED 42” 42LS3400

FWIW, I already have a WDTV Live Streaming Media Player connected to a conventional LCD TV.

Not quite sure about that one... but most LCD and LED TVs with built in media-player functionality don't have the wide variety of pre-loaded codecs that the WD player does.
