For me, they are pretty much the same. I've used Toshiba, Asus, HP and Acer. So far they all served well. Usually the battery dies first. Memory and HDD are user replacable parts. LED monitors can be replaced by local rpair shops. Dont bother going to the casa, they charge so high its better to buy new. 3rd party repair shops can do the same for a lot less money.

    Just stay away from NEO.

Deciding between Asus and Acer for now. Price of 14 inch models of 4th gen Intel chip is between 20-30T.

Personally from the netbooks and laptops I have tried in the last few years, I would go with ASUS.

Typical would be Intel I3 or I5 CPU with 4gb ram. Screen size is 13 to 14 inches.
GPU would be Intel HD4000 or some NVidia accelerated chipset with 1 or 2 GB of video memory.
CD/DVD drive depends if you are getting an ultrabook or notebook type of laptop.

i've had my acer for more than 5 years already. it is always on 24/7 when i am at work, and used maybe 2-3 hours daily when on vacation.
    - changed the battery once, di ko kasi tinatanggal kahit naka-plug in 24/7. now i've learned my lesson, remove the battery if it is plugged in, masisira daw pag laging 100% charged tapos naka-plug in pa din
    - changed the HD 2 years ago. now the replacement HD is again unreadable (but can't blame that on acer, replacement na yun e). so i have 2 HD that need data recovery. san ba magaling?
    - there's a dead pixel, hardly noticeable. this appeared last year only.
so yeah, umaandar pa siya. i'll just need to replace the hard drive.
semi-retired na siya, sa bahay na lang. i'm just using my note 8 for travelling.

Forget Acer. If you plan to use the notebook for a whole lot longer than a year, take GH's advice and get the Asus.

We've had four Acers and all of them developed all sorts of problems in the first two years. Bang for the buck notebook for home use right now is Asus.

Is it still cheaper to get in U.S. (assuming shipping is free) or is the price difference negligible? Are there still brands that honor international warranty?
The most reliable these days are Toshiba, Asus, HP, Sony and Dell. For international warranty, HP and Dell automatically has that, Asus and Sony also but you have to check the bundled warranty service card. Its better you buy it in the place of your location. The price difference from North American price is no more than $200 without shipping and taxes. It will become cheaper if you have somebody to bring it in rather than shipping it.

HP laptops are crap. I used to be a licensed tech fixing them years ago... crap then, still crap today.

The people at tipidpc forum tell everyone to avoid Samsung laptops. Lenovo laptops are not allowed in sensitive U.S. government agencies. Something about a back door chip built-in every Lenovo laptop.

Kakabili lang ng dad ko nitong samsung laptop worth 38k for my brother. Nagcocomplain pa rin bro ko dahil mabagal daw sobra and he still uses my 3 yr old HP and Asus laptop. Sabi ko dapat nagmacbook air na lang tapos installan ng windows 8. Tsktsk sayang pera sa samsung na yun.

Hm,, just ordered an x220 pa naman. There are follow up reports that refute these claims, and no independent entity has verified this.

I think this has something to do with the built-in AMT feature that's enabled by default...in any case, wouldn't hurt to follow this story...

Speaking of tough notebooks, there are military grade laptops and tablets out there for military, medical, etc. Certain think pads and biz notebooks are MIL-spec'd

Do they still sell the x220? Akala ko phased out na un. I have the x230, and wala akong masabi re the performance and battery life. Kaya 10 hours of browsing, editing and watching movies. Startup is instant. Drawback lang ung thickness nya, medyo makapal nga lang kumpara sa iba w/ the same specs. And afaik, NASA only uses thinkpad laptops.

Stay away from NEO. I've seen 2 die from overheating. Another had its hinges break.
