I doubt there's anything underhanded in Intel's marketing with Centrino/Centrino Duo. The Centrino moniker is just that, a moniker for having the three core Intel components.
Having said that, I do own a budget priced Toshiba AMD Turion X2 15.4" lappie:
AMD Turion X2 dualcore 1.8 ghz
2gb DDR2 ram
Radeon X1200
250gb 4200 rpm SATA hard drive
8x DVD dual layer burner
4in1 card reader
PC Expresscard slot
Atheros WiFi G wireless
4-pin firewire, svideo out, vga out, 4 x usb2, LAN, modem
Vista Home Premium
It's slower than most Core 2 Duos. It's video is actually a bit inferior to the X3100. But, I bought it mainly for email and web surfing plus video/dvd movie watching while traveling. So, I wouldn't feel the impact of those disadvantages. It did cost $200-$300 less than an equivalent C2D laptop at the time. That, I was well aware of. And that's really the only advantage a Turion X2 laptop has. Price and sometimes not even that.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; May 2nd, 2008 at 05:40 AM.

right now i'm using my Compaq Presario V3770TU(centrino c2d) which is very battery efficient than my wifes ACER Aspire 4920G-101G16N(c2d). so i think centrino is not a bogus because it works.
laptop is not made for hardcore gaming but still you still play some.
if your going for performance go for a pc.
build your own. like what i did and it gives a smile on my face when it play hard

mga sir, centrino is not just a non sense sticker pala.. tama si sir sboogie na tipid sa batt ang centrino pero centrino is not a processor. its an intel technology that reduces the battery consumption, thus making baterry life longer. just read it on google.
sboogie: im not a hardcore gamer. we already have a desktop here so that's why my dad is buying me a lappy for my use. our desktop is just a p3 and cant install new games. im not just using a laptop gor just plain games. also for internet surfing and doing projects (ms word)..
donski: wow amd has better graphics. maybe because amd is good for games and intel is for all around daw...

baliktad bro... it's the acer that's centrino... so it's the centrino that has worse battery life
the compaq probably has better battery life because it doesn't have a separate graphics chip...
just to recap: centrino is not a chip, it's not some technology, it's not some power-saving magic...
it's simply a name intel has spent lots of marketing dollars on, and judging from the responses on this thread it's money well spent

sir fyi compaq and hp are now merged.. mac? uh.. no way.. pangit yan.. kasi walang pambili toshiba ok din pero erpat ko kasi bibili. sa US. HP is US made daw and is the highend among other US lappys. while toshiba stands in japan. mas ok talaga ang toshiba kesa sa hp? wala pa naman akong nababasang masasamang review against hp pavilion. the cons that people say is just that hot left hend because the HD is placed under there. and the radiant/glossy finish makes a BIG finger print magnet. other than that, wala na. HP kasi talaga ang reccomend ng erpat ko.. research nalang ako sa toshiba
