honestly di ko nga alam na may alliance or organization dito sa pinas e hehehe. i just go online and download what i need and refer to the documentation there.
i just use the stuff in development. most start-up tech companies prefer open-source para walang sabit sa licensing.

basically, open-source means a program's code("source" in geekspeak) is available. so this translates into people being able to modify this code(changing, adding, enhancing) to suit their needs-and consequently coming up with a better program or something more customized. take for example LINUX.. since open source sya, we have companies coming up with their own flavors of LINUX, Red Hat, Mandrake, Fedora etc etc.

What are the advantages of open source? ITS FREE :D no people wil break down your door and confiscate your pcs for using it. hehe

Disadvantages? no warranty, implied or otherwise(with some exceptions). in other words, use it at your own risk. but why do people still use it? because geeks all over the world continuously support open-source("knowledge is for humanity") and improve it. besides, the tech community is pretty proud of being able to achieve something new na most people improve open-source for the accolades and recognition and sheer challenge of doing it. (think napster). so despite its not having a warranty, open-source is stable and safe. and support-wise even if you cant call a hotline and complain, there are millions of developers out there willing to help.

bro -- for a good definition, check out this link: http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition_plain.php

essentially, all computer softwares are protected by a source code. from what i understand, the open source movement wants access to the source code not for the purpose of copying and pirating (as this is patently illegal and even i will not condone it) but rather for purposes of being able to make new creations and programs. the bane to the open source movement are the monopolistic software giants like autodesk and microsoft who continue to oppose the open source movement even if they (in my opinion only) may have recovered their investments in r&d many times over already

i personally feel that there can be balance between the interests of these two opposing sides and determining this balance may be good for our country's economic growth and beneficial to all software users

thats one factor for an 'open source or code' you can read/analyze whats the program doing... not exactly virus... those are BUGS...

nope, meron na ring viruses made for linux. ang advantage lang neto, mabilis nareremedyuhan without costs and, naaayos yung vulnerability nung software.

mga pre would definitely like to learn more about open source programs and of course getting to know which are the best of breed programs... I'm currently testing Fedora & Ubuntu... meron pa po ba mas maganda sa dalawang eto (hmm... Novell Linux)???? I'm starting to believe that open source is really becoming a good alternative kasi may updates every 6 months compared to commercial software which takes a lot of time to update... And the improvements are very excellent... why spend 400-500 USD for Vista Ultimate when you can have the OS for free???!!!!

novell has opensuse. although, they're starting to think of themselves as a mixed source company.

    you can also try centos.
its a clone of Redhat Enterprise Linux.

baka you mean Suse Enterprise when you say Novell Linux.
OpenSuse is free while Suse Enterprise is not.

para lang yan Fedora and Redhat Enterprise Linux.
