essentially, all computer softwares are protected by a source code. from what i understand, the open source movement wants access to the source code not for the purpose of copying and pirating (as this is patently illegal and even i will not condone it) but rather for purposes of being able to make new creations and programs. the bane to the open source movement are the monopolistic software giants like autodesk and microsoft who continue to oppose the open source movement even if they (in my opinion only) may have recovered their investments in r&d many times over already

i personally feel that there can be balance between the interests of these two opposing sides and determining this balance may be good for our country's economic growth and beneficial to all software users
