Mahal pala ng laptops pag dito bumili. Those laptops I quoted are at the 55-60k price range here, pero nasa 800-900 USD lang.

I also checked the Lenovo store here, they're selling the X1 Carbon for 170k [emoji23] Eh 2,100 USD lang talaga yun. The Lenovo that's priced the same as the HP Envy 13 is the Ideapad 320S which costs 56k.

All the 30k laptops I see are either big and bulky with semi-entry level specs, or netbooks which are portable but with ultra-slow specs.

    This is a Lenovo Ideapad 330 - i3-7020U processor, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 1366x768:

    This looks like a better buy - the Asus X407U - 28k, i3 CPU, 4GB RAM, 1366x768, 128GB SSD + 1TB.

But if I were to get one at under 30k I will most likely get this - Acer Swift 3 - i3-7100U, 4GB, 1TB HDD, 1920x1080 screen - 28.5k. It's also the slimmest of the bunch:

Upgrade the RAM nalang to 8GB (6k) and 256GB SSD (5k). So you'll end up at almost 40k also but it's worth it.

My dad recently got an Acer Swift 1 with an N5000 processor, 4gb RAM, and 128gb SSD at around that same price. I told him to prioritize the SSD over other specs. RAM can be easily upgraded later. He only uses it for documents and browsing anyway. Masaya naman sya so far.

I got spoiled on SSDs because the laptop issued by my previous employer was equipped with one. When I resigned and had to buy a personal laptop it only had a 1TB HDD and load times were not acceptable. I DIY installed an M2 500gb SSD on it and moved Windows over. When I got another laptop from my new employer I also DIY installed another M2 500gb SSD on it. Windows now loads on both laptops in less than 30 secs (i5 8250, 16GB RAM).

Laking difference eh. Yung Asus i8250 took more than a minute to start Win10 on its stock 1TB HDD. 860 EVO ang ginamit ko since it's our personal unit. The work unit got the 970 EVO.

OS and programs lang nilalagay ko sa SSD. Working files stay on the HDD.

Yup. My old 2013 ASUS RoG G46VW (i5-3230m, 8gb RAM) got an SSD upgrade plus a new OEM battery. Boot up times are quick and battery life is once again over 7 hours. The old battery only had enough juice for 2 hours and decreasing.

Both of my kids have laptops (ASUS i7-6500U and Lenovo N3150) that already have SSD storage. No real need to upgrade them.

Dapat i3 ba talaga? I noticed mura yun mga AMD. I like this one, looks similar to my current lenovo pero celeron e. Also, what's the SSD spec?

    This one super cheap

SSD, solid state drive.. instead of the traditional hard disk, parang dikit dikit na memory disk na lang sya.. wala nang moving mechanical parts.. mas mabilis compared to regular hard disk.. think big flash disk..

Not necessarily i3. If you'll get an AMD though, get a quad-core AMD because the i3 today already has a quad-core.

Even if you're not a heavy user, having a quad-core CPU is good future-proofing because you keep laptops for a long time. Also suggest to get at least 8GB RAM so you won't need to upgrade down the line.

SSD (solid state drive) is also a must. As explained, it makes loading apps and booting up much, much faster than a traditional hard drive. Only drawback is cost - for the price of a 256GB SSD, you can already get a 1TB hard drive. Would suggest to get a laptop with 256GB SSD then just get an external hard drive if you have a lot of files.

I'd also make sure the laptop battery is user-serviceable. A lot of new laptops have non-user friendly internal batteries that require serious disassembly of the laptop instead of just switching out an old battery for a new one.

Seems like the new laptops don't have easily detachble batteries anymore. My choices require to disassemble also

Thanks everyone for the advise. I narrowed down my choice between the two. It's upgrdable (ram and ssd) I will do that in the future since I don't know yet how to transfer windows to SSD so I will be using my laptop as is.

I am thinking if the USD80 difference is worth it for the backlit keyboard e this is older and has less ram pa:

Cheaper, newer and more ram but no backlit keyboard

Don't get the i3-7100U - dual-core lang yan unlike the i3-8130U which is quad-core na. Big difference in performance.

The backlit keyboard usually isn't worth it, depending on the execution. I have it on my X1 and I don't use it. On my Macbook Pro though it's not obtrusive and looks clean so I keep it on.

Key points to get in a laptop - i3-8130U or i5-8250U CPU, 8GB RAM, SSD.

Suggest you get a laptop with those specs already instead of upgrading para less hassle.

This for me much more sulit:

i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, touch screen - all in a very slim package.

If you're really penny-pinching, this is $45 cheaper but IMO the Dell is a better buy:

This one naman has a 256GB SSD which I think is worth the extra $35 over the 128GB version above:

An SSD and 8GB of RAM should be a must if you are considering getting a laptop.

Anything less and you’re setting yourself up for frustration.

Case in point, my company’s IT Dept allocated me a laptop with 4GB of RAM. I decided not to use it and brought my macbook to work instead. I told my manager that I needed it to be efficient at my job. He agrees.

Do you think I can get something below USD400?

With 8GB RAM and an SSD? I doubt it, unless it's one of thoee crazy gadget sales.

The extra $50-80 you'll spend for a good laptop now will make a lot of difference down the road. I suggest coughing up the extra cash even if it means delaying the purchase rather than settling with a mediocre laptop that's outdated before you even buy it.

Ex-officemates have been complaining about BSODs on their T470s and T480s recently. Take note that these are the high-end variants with a touch-screen and 16gb RAM. Most complaints can be traced back to the SSD which is also provided by Lenovo. The company does install whole-disc encryption and other proprietary security measures so those might be one of the causes of the SSD failures.
